Try opening WMP from the start menu. You may have to configure it a little bit. it. Works well here for what it's worth. Try an MP3. It's too bad you 'hate' it already, it is quite a decent OS and it is new.

If it is then JPGs are image files and do not open with WMP, they open with Windows Photo Gallery or similar, but then as your searching for Adult films and alike then those files may be anything, including malware, many files hosted on various download locations are not always what they seem to be a JPG extention on a file doesnt always mean the file is a picture and vice versa with .MPGs that file extention doesnt mean its a movie.

You may also not have the right codecs to play a downloaded movie as Vista does not have the likes of DivX codecs built in, you need a codec pack.

But do what Augie mentions above and open WMP with music file to see if it works.
