Have network conection & yhmessenger wrks But ie won't work

Hi, new here ,other laptop is running windowsXP and useing EI. Computer says it is connected to the internet and i can use yahoo messenger but when i try to get on a website of anykind it just says..."detecting proxy settings". Did a virus scan with my Norton & found nothing. tried to do an Adaware scan but when i tried it shut my computer down. I sometimes connect with my wireless when away from home & other times dsl useing a cable. not sure what has happened i just woke up to it not working. any1 have any ideas? thank you!

its very late, and i may not have read incorectly, but possibly you could repair conectin by going to Sart > Control Panel > nrtwork connections > and repairing your internet conection, if thats not it simply go trough the ntwork wizard that should help you, its not a virus, has your pc crashed lately?

yes it is late lol was on my way to bed.i will try what you said in the AM or i'll end up staying awake till the wee hrs. didn't think it would be network connections since my messenger works but i'll give it a go in the morning....ty and i'll post what happens

Help!!! i just tried what you said but didn't work....when i was repairing the connection it just stayed on ..Clearing DNA cache. still have messanger but not webpages show up?? i did the ping4.2.2.2 thing and it is resieving and sending

Sounds like a DNS problem. YIM uses an ip to connect to so doesn't need to resolve a name to an ip.

Does this work ?

Try these, if one doesn't work move on to the next one.

1: Run CCleaner to clear out any cahced 404 pages

2: If you are using a router, power cycle it.

3: If you are using a cable modem, reset it

4: Flush your DNS Cache (ipconfig /flushdns from a command prompt)

5: Reset your web settings (In IE goto Tools --> Reset Web Settings)

ok i guess i don't know as much about computers as i thought lol because YIM means nothing to me. and i can't run CCleaner as i can't get on the internet to download it (. what does power cycle it mean? i reset modem ...nothing. tried an Adaware scan again and it gave me an error and shut the computer down. ugghh i'm thinking virus? i am going to flush the DNS cache and reset the web setting right now ...brb & ty

YIM is yahoo instant messenger.

power cycle means turn it off and on again

Did the link with the ip work for you ?

just did flushed the cache and reset web page and typed in the ip address you gave me and it just say...page cannot be displayed

when i open ie it gives me a white page and in the progress bar just says detecting proxy settings. when tried to shut down ie i got an error report that stayed on ..trying to connect to server.

lol i do have CCleaner on my Dell laptop ...lol i guess i could put it on a disk and try it on the messed up laptop? anything else i could download that may help....ty

IN IE goto Tools -> Internet Options.

Click Connections

Click LAN Settings

UNTICK 'Detect network settings'

Click apply

restart internet explorer

k did that.....says connecting to site 216.23.181.212 and the progress bar has stopped at a 1/4 of the way

Have you tried resettings your web settings in the list above? Did yuo reset your router yet?

ohhh no i think i've stumped every1 lol yes i did all that.the laptop is my husbands and he uses it at my house on wireless and at his house on wireless & plugs it in. virus maybe??

Possibly. Could be a dns HIJack but it doesn't sound like it, I think its just more likely that IE is misconfigured. can you try downloading firefox on another computer, transfering it and seeing if that works? That will tell us if its just IE or all your internet.

i downloaded the new internet Exlorer on cd and am going to see if that works....i am waiting for it to do it's updates ( very slow) then i will try the firefox cd if explorer 7 doesn't work

NO lol, I'm sure this can be fixed without resorting to a format! I still think something isn't set up correctly.

Goto Start --> Run and type in CMD and hit enter

Type in ipconfig /all and press enter, tell me what it says!

could you have a look at the other computer that works and compare the configuration ? See if they have the same settings ?

Possibly. You oculd try ringing them and see if theres a problem with your service.

it's not my server....k i compared the 2 and mine CMD says my IP routing is enabled and the messed up computers in not. could that be something?
