Hmmm... need to know a bit about the network, Dy.
    Do you have a domain?

You can USUALLY tell by how you log in.

Do you see the default welcome screen:

    http://www.theeldergeek.com/images/HT0_000/SP32-20040627-230706.gif

    Or the classic login screen:

    http://www.theeldergeek.com/images/HT0_000/SP32-20040627-234515.gif

One thing that will tell you for certain is if you have the classic login screen, and if there is more than one option on the drop down next to 'Log On To' when you press the 'Options' button.

Well actually the classic login screen comes up first with this error message.

"system could not log you on make sure your user name and domain are correct then type your password again. Letters in password must be typed using correct case."

When I hit ok then it takes me to the default login screen.

    does that make sense?

  4. Mada_Milty

    Mada_Milty MajorGeek

That makes sense if someone's tried to setup the machine to log on automatically, and messed up the credentials. That's a separate issue I can probably help with, but we'll look at that later.

I take that to mean you don't get to type/click at the classic login screen at all?

Sounds like you are using a workgroup, not a domain.
I'd refer to this Microsoft KB titled, How to configure file sharing in Windows XP, as this will show you how to properly share this folder on the network.

Don't worry if the operating system isn't XP, the steps are only slightly different (if at all) for other NT based versions. (NT/2000/XP/Vista) Post back if there are any problems.

  5. dyamond

    dyamond Imelda Marcos of Majorgeeks

no it doesnt allow me to type anything in the classic login screen.

I tried what it said and restarted but I still get the same error message as in my first post.

Can you be a little more descriptive? What specifically was done, and where?

Just a thought - is this an XP computer? If so - can you reboot in safe mode and access the Admin account?

  9. dyamond

    dyamond Imelda Marcos of Majorgeeks

    Sorry, I did all this:

To turn Simple File Sharing on or off in Windows XP Professional, follow these steps:
    1. Double-click My Computer on the desktop.
    2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
    3. Click the View tab, and then select the Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended) check box to turn on Simple File Sharing. (Clear this check box to turn off this feature.)

I restarted, tried to access a folder on the network and got the same error message, so I went back the KB and tried all the troubleshooting including turning off the firewall.

After all that, I still cant access any folders on the network.

  10. dyamond

    dyamond Imelda Marcos of Majorgeeks

Yes, its XP Pro. Would I be able to connect to the network in safe mode?

  11. Natakel

    Natakel Guest

No. But If this problem was caused by someone setting a password on the regular account, perhaps it would be possible to correct it by using the Admin account - change/delete the password for the regular account. I'm not sure this will work . . . just something to try

    Just a thought . . .

  12. Mada_Milty

    Mada_Milty MajorGeek

Okay, that's step one, and you haven't said whether this was done on the server or the workstation.

We'll also need to configure the correct 'Access Level' for the folder. Assuming your users need to read and write to and from this folder, that means you need level 5. We'll have to share out the folder using the instructions for that level, as well.

Note: this needs to be done on the server that is sharing out the folder. If the password you mention isn't preventing you from doing this on the server, then it does not affect the situation. The error posted above is regarding file permissions.

If so, then the admin account is the easiest way to correct that, as per Natakel's suggestion.

  13. dyamond

    dyamond Imelda Marcos of Majorgeeks

I'm sorry I guess Im not really with it today.

All this work was done on the computer generating the error message (not the server). Should I try all these steps on the server or just configuring the "Access Level"?

  14. Mada_Milty

    Mada_Milty MajorGeek

I apologize, I should have made it more clear, but yes, this will need to be done on the server, the machine that is sharing out the folder. The permissions on this folder determines whether other users on the network can connect to it.

I dunno. If you have physical access to the server, you should be able to reset the active account of the dispatch computer in question. At the server level, you can set or reset any password you wish, grant or deny any file access you wish. I'm just stuck on what you said - somebody set a password on the PC in question - was the password for the actual log-in on that one PC? Or is this a secondary login unique to your sites' network?

If you are uncomfortable fiddling with the server, I'd stick with trying to fix this on the problem PC.

It would help if I knew what server software you are running, and a basic outline of your LAN.

Ok, now Im on the server (W2K server) and I went to turn on the simple file sharing and under My computer>Tools>folder options>view I dont have a box for Simple File Sharing. Not sure what to do here?

OK I tried to set the "Access Level" to 5.
    1. Right-click the folder, and then click Sharing and Security, after I right click I dont have anywhere it says sharing and security, just open, explore, search..etc.

    Am I completely hopless? LOL

  17. Mada_Milty

    Mada_Milty MajorGeek

The error message posted shows that she is trying to browse to a folder on a remote computer called 'Server', and getting denied access. I really don't think this is about a password at all. From the last post we can tell that she has credentials to both server and workstation.

The permissions have to be set on the server that is sharing out the folder.

Let me find the appropriate instructions for Win2K.

In the meanwhile, dy, can you go to any machine, right-click 'My Computer', select 'Properties', switch to the 'Computer Name' tab, and take a screenshot? I THOUGHT we were on a workgroup, but your last post made it sound like you could have a domain, after all.

  18. Natakel

    Natakel Guest

I was going with her original post - that someone had set a password on a PC that was part of a network, and said PC was unable to access the server of that network - which it was able to before. I may have missed something in the posts, I guess.

OMG, I'm an @$$ - I just realized we BOTH may be right! Friggen tunnelvision, I tell you!

It COULD be a password issue if we're on a domain. I should have found this out for certain before going ahead.

Dy, you mention this password... does that mean you're logging on as someone else? (ie, does the desktop look different at all?)

That could be the source of our permissions problem!

Edit: Okay, nevermind, we are on a workgroup after all.

  22. Mada_Milty

  23. dyamond

yes, its in the same workgroup.

  24. Natakel

    Natakel Guest

Not really . . . I've seen such errors before, and they have been generated by user accounts, not by a problem on the server. I should have asked, I guess, if other PC's that are a part of this network are still able to access the server as before - or is this problem limited to the one (dispatch) PC.

I dunno, Mada - I can only speak to what I've run into.

  25. Mada_Milty

    Mada_Milty MajorGeek

And just to be certain, yours can connect to this folder, but the other workstation (the dispatch computer ??) cannot?

  26. dyamond

    dyamond Imelda Marcos of Majorgeeks

Every other computer in the office can connect except the dispatch one.

  27. Natakel

    Natakel Guest

Then the problem is on the dispatch PC . . . and must have something to do with the password that the employee set; or some other action he/she took . . . something has changed the credentials of that PC to an extent the server refuses to acknowledge it.

Did you try the Safe mode/Admin account?

  28. Mada_Milty

    Mada_Milty MajorGeek

Alright, I apologize to you both, I'm apparently just blowing smoke.

I don't recall user accounts being tied into workgroup security, but something is certainly screaming that.

You are logging into the dispatch computer with a different account now, dy, due to the password issue?

Argh, that still doesn't seem right to me, as

the supposed share permissions DON'T exclude any user account on the workgroup. (ie, you should be able to connect, even with the WRONG user account)

But, that will be the last I muddy these waters. Again, sorry to you both.

  29. dyamond

    dyamond Imelda Marcos of Majorgeeks

no but I will, what do I do once Im in there?

  30. Natakel

    Natakel Guest

Go into the control panel and access user accounts. See if the usual account for the dispatch PC is listed, and if so, opt to change the password. Change it back to what it was, or make it a blank, then reboot. See if it works.

  31. dyamond

    dyamond Imelda Marcos of Majorgeeks

Im still logged on as computer administrator on the dispatch computer (althought I just found out because I was fixing a different problem on a different computer that the person who set the pw "changed" the name of the pc from admin to dispatch cuz he thought it would "fix" the problem rolleyes)

I still dont have access to any files on the network.

  32. Natakel

    Natakel Guest

No apologies needed, Mada, I can relate. I'm just lucky to have some small experience with Win2000 server woes . . . and I'm just as apt to be wrong, just as you are just as apt to be right. My experience is limited to work-a-day, while you have more nuts and bolts savvy on this issue. I'm still not sure how to proceed on this issue. It's all good! :)

  33. Natakel

You are on the dispatch computer in safe mode? I'm confused now - there are other problems this idiot caused?

  34. dyamond

    dyamond Imelda Marcos of Majorgeeks

Under safe mode, all I can do is change the password to the "administrator" account. That would be rather pointless because I know the password. Is there a way I can delete that account or take the password off all together?

  35. dyamond

    dyamond Imelda Marcos of Majorgeeks

yes the dispatch computer under safe mode.

    just for clarification -

    server pc - no problem
dispatch pc - problem (cant access anything on the network AFTER this password was put on)

  36. Natakel

    Natakel Guest

I take it the usual user account for the dispatch PC is listed, and you are unable to change the password field? Then I am not sure how to proceed.

. . . I just found out because I was fixing a different problem on a different computer that the person who set the pw "changed" the name of the pc from admin to dispatch cuz he thought it would "fix" the problem rolleyes)"

    What's the other problem?

  37. Mada_Milty

See, this was my next thought, that the computer's SID was altered enough so that the server doesn't think it's in the same workgroup.

That would make sense with the computer name changing, but only if that was done BEFORE the problem started, and dy is hinting that it was done after.

Dy... the name change of the computer was in an attempt to get onto the network folder?

  38. dyamond

    dyamond Imelda Marcos of Majorgeeks

Yes, he changed it in hopes of being able to reconnect to the network.

It never had a password to start with it would always just start up w/o having to input anything (the dispatch computer).

  39. theefool

    theefool Geekified

    These are just my thoughts.

You could always remove the password and change the computer name back to the original, since what he did, didn't resolve anything.

I believe that the workgroup computer username and password has to be within the local user manager on the w2k server with same username and password.

My only thought is why the w2k server isn't set up to be a domain controller. That way, most of these issues would be permissions only.

Another thought, can you just browse to \\server instead of \\server\company data?

I also assume that you do not have an IT department?

Just my thoughts on the matter. Just follow Natakel and Mada_Milty's instructions.

  40. dyamond

    dyamond Imelda Marcos of Majorgeeks

There was never an original name (that I knew of) and it wouldnt let me remove the password, just change it.

how can I find out what the user name and passwords are on the W2K server?

No, I keep getting the same error message as in my first post

I AM the IT department :D

I tried that, it didnt work. For the lack of time, I tried a system restore - went back a week and I still get the same stinkin error message :banghead

Thanks you guys so much for your suggestions. Is there anything else possible to do to get this computer to connect to the network? being the dispatching computer its vital that it has access to all the files and folders on the network.

  43. Mada_Milty

This is a fairly good suggestion. Here's how:

    On the server

    1. Right-click 'My Computer' and select 'Manage'
    2. In the 'Computer Management' window, expand 'Local Users And Groups'

In the 'Users' folder, we're hoping to find your regular dispatch user account.

  44. dyamond

    dyamond Imelda Marcos of Majorgeeks

I found it (dispatch) but there wasnt any password or anything. Im totally at a loss, nothing seems to work.

Hope you got this worked out . . . got called away from my PC and never made it back. Then, I went to sleep!

Alright, so Adrynalyne informs me that the DHCPNodetype on the server and workstations must match, otherwise we will see the error message posted.

This jives with what we've determined in this thread, as well as a number of threads I've found on the internet, so I think it's worth investigating.

Can you fill me in on what you've done on his recommendations, dy? He tells me that you've been unable to change the nodetype at the workstation. Can you outline what you've done?

  47. dyamond

    dyamond Imelda Marcos of Majorgeeks

Ok, under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters He had me create a new DWORD value for Nodetype which I did, restarted and nothing changed, I still cant access anything on the network and the node is still "unknown" under ipconfig.

Out of sheer curiosity (about 5 minutes before you asked) I checked with the other computers in the office (the server and mine) and the DWORD value for the Nodetype is the same as what Adryn had me create it to be (on the dispatch pc) and still no go.

    need anymore info?

Are there any firewalls on the machine?

What is the make/model of your router?

  49. dyamond

    dyamond Imelda Marcos of Majorgeeks

There is only Trend Micro PC-Cillin Internet Security 2007 - Adryn suggested un-installing it but I cant it was purchased and downloaded via internet for so many users (I wouldnt be able to download it again), plus Im not allowed too :D

I did turn off every feature I could find and try and access it again still a no go.

    Router is a Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL router Model # BEFSR81 Ver. 2
