Have someone hijacked my PC?

The network status on my laptop shows lots of traffic, even when I am not doing anything and do not have any applications opened.

This is the test/syntom:

• I tested it by not having any other PC connected to this network and monitor the router (netgear WPN 824) and modem (DSL)

• Under the same condition with no application opened. My wireless card (SMC 2336a-g) network status showed a lot of traffic send & receive. But if I disable the wireless card and use 'wired' connection, it's normal, ie no traffic.

• The interested part of this situation is that there was no activity on the modem although the wireless card status is busy. I check the log on the router, also nothing.

• I have used a few (Norton, McAfee, Pc-cillin) to scan the laptop's harddisk and no virus, scanned with a few different spyware softwares too and deleted all the usual suspects.

• 
  also tried to use zonealarm, didn't help either, even when I lock the network using zone, traffic goes on.
  
  • I have deleted and reinstalled the wireless card driver and software, didn't make any difference either.

You can use netstat -ano on the command line to see which ports are sending traffic. You can use the PIDs in task manager to disable any services that might be causing chatter.
