Have to boot twice to get sound

    Hi everyone,
I have a strange problem. When my system reboots I have no sound. I have to go into device manager, uninstall it then do a search for changes.... but then I have to reboot and the sound comes back.
This is driving me crazy trying to figure out how to get it to recognize my sound card the first time it boots.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Oops I forgot more details. I have a Dell, running Windows 7 64 bit, and the sound card is VIA (can't remember the exact version as I am not at home) I downloaded the most recent drivers yesterday. I read somewhere to check the mobo but when I try and identify which one I have, it says "unknown"
    Ugh. Frustrating!
    Thanks

    Greetings, gofergal...

First thing that comes to mind is a driver reinstall - probably audio, maybe chipset. When you get a chance please provide your Dell Service Tag number - instructions for locating the sticker are found here. With that number we'll be able to link you to the proper downloads.

Occasionally my Win 7 64-bit system (it's an ASUS CM1630) exhibits the same symptoms as yours: no audio on boot, yet audio's fine after a reboot. I've found that the VIA HD Audio Deck gets lost sometimes in the startup shuffle, and I've never been able to resolve the problem. Doesn't bother me too much because I leave my machines running all the time, but I can understand the annoyance.

I'm still leaning towards a sound/chipset driver re-installation, but if that doesn't work something you might check is if the symptoms persist if you boot into Safe Mode. If Safe Mode is full of sound all of the time, then it's possible something startup-related is the culprit.

    Thanks,

    Good morning...

I apologize - I missed that upon first reading your post. Regardless, I'd re-install the R237832.exe just to get that out of the way. Unfortunately, I'm not seeing a chipset driver download - way to go, Dell...:confused

Did you try the Safe Mode boot? I'm interested in the results of that test. Also, when you state that you have 'no sound' does the taskbar volume icon (or VIA audio deck icon) disappear?

Thanks everyone. I THOUGHT I had installed the most recent drivers (according to device manager) however, Dell thought otherwise. It looks like I now have the correct one installed as I have booted twice and have sound both times.

However, a new problem occurred this last boot...... I got an error:
*The game is running in software rendering mode*
It says: "Hardware acceleration is either disabled or not supported by your video card driver, which could slow game performance. Make sure you have the latest video card driver installed and that hardware acceleration is turned on"
I went back to Dell and ran their diagnostic program for the video driver and everything came back ok. I guess I don't know where to check next. Oh, it occurred with the windows game, Spider Solitaire.
Any suggestions? I have never had that error before.
    Thanks.

    Good morning...

Glad that you have sound now.

I recommend doing the same thing you did with the audio - reinstall the latest Dell graphics driver (despite what the diagnostic program tells you). However, if that doesn't work it might be a good idea to start a new thread concerning any video issues - wouldn't want to get mixed symptoms going in case your audio dropped out again.
