My friend said his laptop was messed up so he took it to Best Buy. He got it back and what they did was format the harddrive and just gave it back to him. So I turn it on and all it says is:

"Type the name of the Command Interpreter (e.g., C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM)"
    "C>"

He has a Toshiba Satellite, PIII 1.2GHZ (maybe not sure), 512MB RAM, 30 GB HD.

And there is no way to recognize any other drives, cd-rom, usb, nothing.

I am at a loss of what to do here because I can't even get a BIOS screen to boot from CD-ROM, I can hold F8 but that does me no good because there is no OS to get into Safe Mode from.
Do you guys know what I can do to fix this??
    Thanks

    Hi Robo

There is no Dual boot that I know of. He has a DVD-rom drive and that will recognize cd's like the little orange light will come on but you are unable to go to a D:\, or any drive to get anywhere. So in otherwords there is no way to boot from anything. I have no way of Slaving the Harddrive to a pc or another Laptop because wont work with a PC and laptops only have one port for HD.
I think I am just going to have him give it back to Best Buy and say you guys messed this up. What do you think???

I like the hole sueing idea that sounds good to me. I will have him take it back to best buy and when he goes and I am going to go with so that I can say "hey you guys are dumb and messed this up, fix it or we sue" j.k but something like that because this is bogus.

Follow Mastertechs advice. Set boot order to CD first. Insert your Windows CD or Recovery CD and reboot. Hopefully reinstalling will solve the problem he had.

See thats the Problem is there is nothing on the computer there is no way to get to a BIOS screen or anything. I have tried anything and everything and I am out of ideas and that is why I like the idea of going there on a really busy time.

A computer always has a BIOS. It is built into the motherboard. If it didn't, you wouldn't be able to boot up to anything, including the command prompt. However, I would still take it back to Best Buy and tell them to fix it. Not to mention, get a refund. (if he paid anything to have this done)

You guys all have good points but for the record

THERE IS NO COMMAND PROMPT, THERE IS NO BIOS THAT I CAN HIT AND HOLD F2 TO GET.

Other than that it is on warrenty and my friend said something about if he brings it in one more time they have to give him a new one or something.

But yeah definitly back to BB for sure.
Thanks for all the comments this has been fun I am sure we will have way more in the future.

Agree with Robo and MT, I take it that you aren't waiting for a "prompt" to show before pressing a key to get into the BIOS set-up?

Yes I did try that, I tried that before I posted anything for this thread.

I've experienced similar problems on different Toshiba laptops and it could depend on the model as to which Fn key to press to get into the BIOS. I'd also suggest taking the battery out and putting back (you'd be suprised).

Also, go and visit the TOSHIBA site and look at the manual for the laptop. This will leave you with no doubt which Fn key to press and it might even provide some help.
