Hello im operating windows xp pro service pack 2 .. in the past 3 days i have reformatted my pc like 5 times im having a major internet error and i dont know what is going on. maybe someone could be of some assistance :) .. My problems is that if i go to such sites as nivida.com or .downloads.com or even www.winamp.com i cannot get past saving the file to my harddisk as soon as i do this it just sits there using ie and mozilla.. ive tried many other sites as well like emule plus and i cant download basic apps . i contacted my isp and they said its a hardware or software problem on my end since im getting a consistent speed rating at the top of the charts according to my download and upload according to them. does anyone know what could be the problem is.

Have you tried going into your browser settings and allowing cookies to be placed on your computer, or tried lowering your security settings? :) Almost forgot, welcome to MajorGeek's!

yeah as soon as i bring up the save box and click where i want to save it it just stalls.. it has been like this with my router and without the router plugged in. my mirc works and i can dcc send files and receive files over irc and i can even surf all webpages fine just when trying to save anything using either browser nothing works i dont get it .. also i have done a scan with adaware and used trends housecall to search for any viruses.. being a fresh install though of sp2 i dont have much installed on my system..

the same thing kodo.. mastermosley the reason why i reformatted in the 1st place is cause steam stopped working on half life 2.. then after that all my downloads dont work

    Are you using a router?

If yes, go straight to your modem.

Do you have another NIC to try?

I've seen the same problem with sp2 and older version of zonealarm. In this case upgrading ZA fixed the problem.

hello i appreciate the responses but some of the questions you ask i have already answered in my pervious posts... im fresh of a reformat i dont have any firewall installed right now ... im on cable internet and im directly connected right now with no router.. the network card is not the issue i tested it for lost packets with nothing... my isp service gives no help since i have no problem connecting to the internet..

Have you disabled the SP2 firewall?

Don't be so sure its not the nic.

Think about it. Several formats, same results, generally means its not software related.

So whats left in this scenario?

    Nic, Cat5 cable, and modem.

I've seen bad nics that don't download, yet can browse.

    Does it make sense?

    Not really.

But when another NIC was tried in those cases, it worked.

yeah i have disabled the windows xp firewall , i dont know i will have to wait till i get paid next to get another network card and try that out ... ive been told by someone that works in a pc store reparing computers that if theres no lost packets when you try and ping yourself with ipconfig that its not a problem of the network card.. sorry i didnt answer sooner this computer issue has me a little stressed i want to throw the thing out the window.
