    Hi all.
I am having a major problem with a compaq 5284.
A few days ago it started to reboot by itself.
First it was error 4 and then it was error 7.
Then it was File\i386\ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded.
I uninstalled win xp to use the quick restore disc. ( back to win 98)
Then I got the error message of
    " Stop:Oxc00000ld,0x808lc313,0xfa396630,0x00000000."
After a few searches I figured it might be a bad stick of ram.
I swapped them out and was able to get the quick restore to load.
Now when I reboot it says cannot find the file" carbon",if you have deleted this file on purpose try reinstalling it.
    Then the computer freezes.
I thought I was missing a file so I tried to do another quick restore.
There is a flashing screen that says copying factory images to system save Partition.
The cdrom then spins down and there it sits.
I have been at this for hours and I have run out of ideas.
I have checked the fans and they are working.
To me it seems to be overheating.
I have cleaned the fans and I am running with the case off.
Any ideas as I am a newbie wanna be.
    Basics yes.
    This problem .
    NO
ALSO I CANNOT BOOT INTO SAFE MODE NO MATTER WHAT I DO.
IT IS LIKE AN ENDLESS LOOP.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do or check ???
Thank you very much in advance.
By the way this is my personal computer.
I have always run virus and adaware and always keep them up to date. ( panda platinum, hijack this and spy bot and crap cleaner.
There was also a mention of a cleaner having a problem but I could not find the file.
This computer is 5 years old.

Google says the stop error "0xC000001D" is either STATUS_ILLEGAL_INSTRUCTION or EXCEPTION_ILLEGAL_INSTRUCTION . In this case, "Instruction" refers to a CPU instruction. The explanation I saw says " The thread tried to execute an invalid instruction -- such as MMX opcodes on a non MMX system. Branching to an invalid location can cause this -- something stack corruption often causes."Compaq Presario 5284 is a K6-2 CPU system. And from the looks of it, it was top-of-the line back in '99.

At this point I was about to say that maybe WinXP doesn't run on a K6-2, but then I found this article were they do just that. And MS does actually mention the K6 unre requirements.

Overheating seems unlikely. Simply put, you have to work pretty hard to overheat a system from 1999. A 450MHz processor should be able to get away with passive cooling and piggybacking off of the power supply's air circulation -- my parent's P3 500 from Gateway did just fine like that.

    So, this leaves:
    Damaged motherboard, CPU
    Damaged HDD
    Damaged CD

The next things I would do is:
    1. Download and run Memtest86 overnight. If there's a problem with the memory subsystem on the motherboard, this might help detect it. In any case, it will get the OS, HDD, and CD out of the way for testing.
    2. Swap out the HDD and CD drives, IDE cables and all. Now try installing.
    3. Before going back to the HDD, I'd run a low-level format (or at least zero-fill the first few sectors) using the HDD manufacturer's toolset.

The most likely thing in my mind are a damaged CPU and/or motherboard (I'm thinking the motherboard memory controller). It might be overheating, but, again, that seems very unlikely unless you're running the processor with no heatsink at all.
