having problems with Java

I was at a site using Java enabled browser when My computer locked up.
I got everything to work except Java appears not to be working.. I get a white screen with
a small box in upper left hand corner with three dots in it. I've checked all the settingsan they are enabled, ran spy-bot and norton and got nothing. When I do a find on Java it appearsthat all the files are there..

os is 98se, use msn browser that comes with msn9, IE is at 6, dialup with msn accelerator.
os software came with computer, only have copy no orginal came with.

any idea's
