Having trouble with monitor reading cable

I have a monitor that has both dvi-D and vga

For a while i just used vga because this is the cable this monitor came with , so i never really bothered using dvi.

Well now since i have some dvi cables, and its alot better than vga i figured i would just use dvi now.

I hook up my monitor to my pc via dvi but i get no signal, the monitor is just black. I figured maybe its a faulty port in the pc motherboard so i try it on another pc and same issue.

I thought it was the cable(s) first but then i tried it on a tv and they worked.

Its just for some reason i can't use dvi on my monitor or i can't figure out how. I switch my input method in my monitor from vga>dvi and the screen goes black, then it just reverts back to vga ( provided vga cable is connected otherwise it stays back).

    Any help much appreciated

It would be helpful to know more about your computer system - such as make and model if a commercial PC (HP, Dell, etc.) or if a custom build the make and model of motherboard, what type video you are using, and what operating system. Also the make and model of the monitor you are trying to use.

If you provide more detail about your system, the folks here will be better able to troubleshoot what the issue is.

Based on statistics, you are probably using a Windows based PC . . . if so, have you updated your video drivers to the most recent version? When I am having any video related issues that's the first thing I do. Since you said you tried it on another computer and it still didn't work it probably won't help, but it's worth a try. From your description the issue seems to lay with the monitor . . . but provide more details and we can go from there.

Definitely need the make and model of the monitor. There are three types of DVI connection: DVI-A, DVI-D, and DVI-I

If the monitor isn't capable of decoding a digital signal, it will not work with a DVI-D output, only DVI-I or DVI-A.

Mine is a dvi-d Dual link

Monitor model is : gateway fpd1775w

I don't think the pc model(s) is relevant? I used other pc's and the monitor is still black ( vga still works but dvi-d won't )... all those pcs were running windows OS and had the recent drivers

Forgot to mention i am using a dvi-d to hdmi cable ( cable has been tested to work on 2 tv's already)

    Just to be clear

The moment my computer is turned on as well as the monitor there is no signal at all.

This means i never see something like an hp, asrock, acer, etc.. logo from the computer because its always black. Its not like it launches to the title computer logo and then as soon as it boots windows it goes black , its completely black from the start since it never gets any signal via dvi

Probably not in this case. But this information can be handy for a myriad of issues and is usually asked for as a matter of course. The more data about what you are working with the better generally.

I think plodr is on to something concerning the cable. Since you did try the DVI connection on different computers that tends to rule out a driver or hardware issue, though not completely.

Judging by the replies i guess i have to try a specific cable to see if it works?

Those cables are about $6 more than the generic ones not sure if i should bother with it anymore in case it doesn't work
