I have the main computer a winxp 3 gb processor, 1 gb ram, 160 gb hd. I am trying to configure the other computers on a network. My main computer has no 3 1/2 floppy drive. Now I am having trouble configuring this network. The other computers are win 98 and win me. I know I have heard it's confusing, but I'm sure it can be done. Please help!

Give your machines internal IPs. I would recommend 192.168.1.101, 192.168.1.102, and 192.168.1.103. Make sure they are all in the same workgroup. On the 98 and ME machines, makes sure file and printer sharing is enabled. Find the folders you would like to share, and right click them. Click sharing and security. Check the box that share this folder on the network. These folders should now appear in my network places and in network neighbourhood.

You do not need any floopy you can configure each computer manually and they would find each other.

Log to this page it has a lot of links to instructions to Windows Network Settings, and Sharing.

Link to: Windows Network - Installing & Sharing.

ok I think i have them set up right on the router now, but the computers still cant see each other...I need to figure out how to disable some settings on the win xp computer for firewall so it wont block the other computers. The win me and win 98 are giving me a headache regarding ip address and etc. HELP! This is new to me and I might have to through this step by step. I only have dial up here so im not sure if the main computer should be going thru to the internet or should the router be connected to internet?

I need some help here. How do I connect to the internet from the client computer on the network? Do I dial-up? I have only dial-up connection in this small town. The host computer is connected to the internet. Is there a password to set up on the client computer to connect to the internet while the host computer is connected? Or can I even connect to the internet with a network when I am on dial-up? The networking is working great though, both computers can see each other. The host computer is winxp and the other is winme.

I'm not certain whether this is an absolute must, but when I had the same set up (shared dialup connection) I had to make sure that the host could connect automatically.

It should be simple to set up. Run the network setup wizard on the XP machine (w/o changing any of your current settings), specifying that you want to set it up as an ICS host, and have it generate the setup requirements for your clients (on a floppy disk...you'll see the option).

I ran the network setup wizard again and tried to make a setup diskette. I had an error saying that a computer or some other program is using the same ip that the host computer needed. So it didnt take me to the step that said to make a setup diskette. The client computer has been connected to the network but, it cant share internet. I checked the ip address on the client computer and configured ip address as 192.168.0.2 because the host needed 192.168.0.1. So anyways i do have 2 on the network and want to have 3. So i went to the client computer that is already connected to the network to make a setup diskette and put it in the computer that i want to have connected and i got this error "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator." What should i do? Any suggestions? And i also cant connect to my music downloading program, Winmx.

Are you using a router to do the network or a hub?
