Hi, I am hoping you can help.

I have Hawking Router, HWR54G. A Scientific Atlanta Cable Modem
A desktop (Primary)....A laptop (Secondary) And all I wish to do is get them both on the Internet and maybe a small network so that I can access the primary computer from a Different location and maybe the printer.

Ran through the Hawking setup wizard, with what appears to be problem free, but once it comes to 'Data Input complete' 'Test Internet Connection' 'Test results', It does nothing, cursor just flashes.

If I connect the modem to the router via Ethernet cable in 'Internet' socket and one to the LAN 1 socket, the primary Internet will show 'Address not found'. Yet the Secondary shows 'Connection excellent' but refuses to open any web pages stating 'Address not found'.

If I reconnect the primary directly back to the modem I get Internet as normal, the secondary still will show 'Excellent Connection' Via the WLAN settings but still refuses to open any web pages stating 'Address not found'.

All lights on the Router flash as they should to show connection and my firewalls are disconnected!

    What am I doing wrong??

Your help ASAP would be very much appreciated.

I'm not familiar with the exact router you mentioned, but routers are more-or-less the same. So, first make sure the router and modem are connected correctly. There should be an ethernet cable running from the modem to the WAN port on the router. Then a cable should run from one of the other ports on the router (LAN ports 1-4) to the ethernet port on the tower. Now, locate the reset button on the back of the router and hold it in for 20-30 seconds. You may need a pen/pencil or a straightened paper clip to push the button. Then restart the PC. You didn't mention which version of Windows you're using so I'll assume it's XP. Go to Control Panel > Internet Options; type your desired home page in the Address box, you must include "http://" at the beginning of the web address; click Apply; click the Connections tab; click the Setup button; click Next; check the top circle and click Next; check the 2nd circle and click Next; check the bottom circle and click Next; click Finish. Now, back at the Control Panel, open up Network Connections; right click the LAN connection and select Properties; click once on Internet Protocol and click Properties; make sure the two circles here are both set to "automatically"; click the Alternate Connections tab and make sure it's set to "automatic" also. Close all this out and try to surf again. If it doesn't go, please provide us more info: the make/model of both PCs, the Windows versions on both PCs, etc.... also, lots of good general troubleshooting info can be found here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936211/en-us
    Good luck!

(once the tower is surfing OK, we'll work on getting the laptop surfing with the wifi, but for that we will need the make and model of the laptop, plus the Windows version installed on the laptop)

    This is expected.
A modem has a memory. It remembers the MAC address of your primary computer. If you want to connect a different computer directly to the cable modem, you need to power down the modem for about a minute so it forgets the MAC address of the previous computer. You can then surf using the secondary computer.

As far as the Hawking router, the accounts I've read have not been too favorable. You may want to return it and try a different brand.

I will try the modem power down, I finally managed to get a response from the Hawking Tech support, they suggested the same thing.

The router was actually given to me after a storm last year some time blew out my modem and router, as my secondary computer was having issues at that time I didnt bother setting the network up, so I didnt realise the problems I would have.

I shall let you know how I get on.

    Thx again.

    Regards Kat.

Does the Atlanta connect via ethernet?

This suggests to me that both the cable modem and the Hawking are trying to act as DHCP controllers (routers). If you are going to use an additional router to the Atlanta you must study the settings to turn off its DHCP.

Alternatively you should set the Hawking as an access point.

Thankyou everyone for all your suggestions and help, but just resetting the modem and then the router did the trick (duhhhh, sounds simple now doesnt it) and the secondary computer just automatically picked it up, so no problems to sort there!

This is one happy chicka thanking you all again! ;)

    Regards Kat!

Yes I think the Hawking sets itself automatically so a reset would have done this.

Please note that many modems and routers these days have two levels of reset, depending upon how long you hold the reset button in for.

    Glad you got it sorted.

Yes I agree, I found that if I unplugged the modem for a minute and while it was off I reset the router for 20 seconds.

When I re-powered the modem, I waited for all the reset (the lights do a sequence thing) then I held the reset for the router again, after only a few seconds the router power light flashed oranged (rather than green) and then all the modem lights began flashes as normal when connected.

I then had to disconnect the router to put the wires where I wanted them (one was wrapped around the desk leg) re-powered the router and the orange light was the first thing on then switched to green, I guess that is the commmunication indication to the modem.

Anyway it works, I am happy!
