haywire mouse actions

in the last few days my computer/mouse has been acting very erratic.

the cursor does not move smoothly, or at a consistant speed. it also will jump to different locations on the screen(s), (i have a 4 monitor, 2 video card setup,) and at times will "stick" in the corners and display the multiple arrows type of thing, (looks something like this rotated 90 degrees, >>>), and will also auto-enable the magnify function by itself.

my mouse is a logitech mx1000 laser cordless. up until this just began, i have had no problems with it. and the degree of my problems, (a few more to list are coming,) makes me wonder if this is JUST a mouse problem.

at times the mouse will start "drawing" the line/box type of dotted line thing on the screen on its own as i move it. (as my horrible descriptions probably indicate, i am very computer unsavvy, so please forgive me.)

it also will unprovokedly enable the "application switch" selector onto the screen.

and, as to the reason why i think that this could be more than just a mouse problem, there are times when i try to click on the bookmarks/favorites section of my browser, and then everything goes kinda beserk, with the computer speedily "rotating" through all of the browser options, i.e., tools, help, file, edit, view, go bookmarks, etc., around and around, at warp speed.

even when i tried to set my preferences for viewing modes when creating this account, i couldnt get the one i wanted, as when i attempted to roll the cursor to the desired selection, it would just run through them all and only let me select the "last" one on the list.

text-highlighting, (i guess that is what it is called when you swipe over text and it turns blue,) also occurs spontaenously, and finally it usually/often takes many clicks before anything happens when clicking on something.

sorry to be so long-winded, as it probalby became evident to knowledgable readers long before i finished all of my problem descriptions, as to what the likely culprit(s) is/are.

anyway, i am at wits and patience end with this.

any help that could be offered would be most gratefully received.

too late to edit, so forgive the additional post.

i omitted what is probalby pertinent information.

my computer is a dell xps, windows xp sp2, pentium4, 3.2 speed, 2 gig ram.

monitors are 4 dell 2001 fp's, with 2 radeon video cards.

p.s. sorry if this is in the wrong forum. as a newb here, and as i said, not very computer savvy, i didnt know where to post.

    erratic mice

Have you tried udating or reinstalling the drivers for that mouse?

    thanks for the response.

i went to logitech's website, and the only thing that i saw to download was what they call "setpoint."

they said that it would override "mouseware".

    i dl'ed that.

other than that, no, i dint reinstall any "drivers." which was what i expected could be the possible problem.

only thing that had me confused was the "rotating" thing that i described when trying to access "bookmarks" on my firefox browser. didnt know if that could be a mouse problem.

any suggestions as to a driver redownload?

When using wireless devices from Logitech, you want the SetPoint drivers, if you have Mouseware of Intelipoint drivers uninstall them from Add or Remove Programs.

i checked under add/remove programs list and didnt see anything under mouseware or intelipoint.

so i guess that i dont have any of that on the machine. (or could i still, and not know what to look for?)

still having the problems though, so...dont really know what next.

Look for Logitech in Add or Remove Programs. If you don't have anything that is Intelipoint or Mouseware related, don't worry about it. Unistall you drivers, reboot, cancel New Hardware found wizard and then load the Setpoint drivers.

    thanks for your patient counsel.

i uninstalled the previous logitech setpoint drivers, and rebooted and redownloaded/reinstalled.

the new hardware detection wizard never popped open.

still having the problems with proper mouse operations.

i have done ALL of the virus/spyware scans from the sticky in the spyware forum and found nothing.

    any further thoughts/suggestions?

again, thanks for all of your patient help/suggestions thus far.

just did a hard reboot and it SEEMS as though things are working as they should, at long last.

will see as we use it more tomorrow.

    thanks again for your help.

too late to edit, so sorry for continually rebumping this back up.

the problems have returned with the mouse erratically jumping to different screeen locations.

i have cleaned the optical area with a q-tip and then used "dust-off" to removed any residue, so i dont think that any foriegn substance is the source of this particular problem.

and the mouse "auto-highlighted" text again on its own.

the slow/erratic movement speed and "dragging" issue seems to have been helped some by the uninstall/reinstall of the drivers, though. the need to click numerous times to get a response has also improved after doing this, as well.

so, still having some of the same problems after doing all this.

any further ideas/suggestions would be very appreciated.

    thanks.

mouse is rechargable, and the charge is full, and has never been low.

i started another thread on this as i had new and different major problems occur which i think were not just mouse related. here's the link:

    http://forum.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=71789

basically when i was typing it started doing it backwards, and the mouse began freezing, and when trying to click on a desktop icon, it would click on a different one in the row of icons from which i was selecting.

    still desperatlely searching for solutions/suggestions.

    thanks.
