I have taken the HD out of my dying DVDr as it has some important files on it. I have installed it into my PC and although the BIOS recognised it, and the computer installed the hardware on restarting it the drive doesn't appear. The HD is a
ST3160212ACE from seagate and the DVDr is a philips branded one.

I hope someone out there has a simple answer for me as there are some family videos on the drive that aren't copied elsewhere.

Hey:) Go to control panel, admin tools, computer management,in the left hand window 'disk management' and check the drive is recognised, note the size and details of the drive such as the file system ect.ect. and add to your next post.

It is set as a slave drive. It is an IDE drive and I'm using Win7

In the disk management screen the HD was not listed although it came up with a message about a drive needing to be initialised. I didn't want to click ok as I wasn't sure which partition option to select and if it might delete the data on the drive.

It had two drives listed although one was a 9 gig partition of the other, not two different drives. The other drive was approx 140 gig so pretty sure thats just the main HD

The drive i installed is a 160 gig drive.

Are you able to try the HD on a PC that has XP or maybe Ubuntu or similar? I have read that Vista will not read 'foreign' HDs, and I guess W7 will be the same. Perhaps you could boot your W7 PC with a Ubuntu disk and see if you can read the HD then
There's some info about this at:
    http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-62...=226798&messageID=2263705&tag=content;leftCol

There's also an interesting thread here:
    http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-62...=226798&messageID=2263705&tag=content;leftCol
Maybe you will find some help there. The question I have after reading that thread is, is your DVDr dying, or is it the HD that's dying?

The whole DVDr is actually sweet as its only the dvd open and shut mechanism that's rooted.

I don't have any access to ubunto.

OK. See post #10 at this site.

You can get Ubuntu free either as a download (about 700 MB), or they will send you a CD in the mail. It seems that the CD might take about 6 weeks to arrive, or you can buy one from a distributor for around $10 to $15.
Download of order CD (see CDs tab) from here:

Hey! Just noticed you're in Kiwiland! G'day! :wave
Ubuntu CD is $9 in NZ, if you don't want to wait for the freeby.

There is one option, which often does work.

Install the HDD in the old PC, and uninstall the drive in Device Manager.

Shut down, and remove the drive from the PC. Install the drive in the new PC, and it MAY just work.

It was actually a topic of discussion on another thread in the last few days.

Post #8 has the details you MAY require. I don't know what your level of PC skills are, so, let us know.

The problem here is that the HDD is out of a DVD recorder/player, not a PC. :(

OK, so let's break this down from a hardware question, to a software question.

I thought he rolled over one of each drive to a new PC. Sorry.

What brand is the DVD recorder, and what is the file format it uses to save the video files?

Software compatibility might be the hang up here.

He said it's a Philips - that's all we've got for now. I have read that they don't use FAT or NTFS (at least some models), and that they run on an OS called VXWORKS.

    I'll download ubunto tonight.

The DVDr is a philips dvdr3570h/75

I too thought perhaps the drive was incompatable.

I can reinstall it in the dvdr and possibly download most of our files (wedding video, kids birthdays etc...why the wife's on my case).

Regardless I'd like to recycle the HD, maybe i can repair the dvd sliding mechanism...probably beyond me tho...

Thanks for the help so far.

At least as a temporary measure, apparently there's a little slide under the machine that can be used to open the DVD drawer.Check Post #2 at this site:

Now we're getting SERIOUS!!! Totally understand your plight!!! :-D

Ok Downloaded Ubuntu (which looks cool by the way...never heard of it before) and installed it as an optional operating system. It recognised the drive but the only option was to format the drive...not what I want to do - at least not yet.

I'm going to try to repair the DVD drive and put it all back together and get the data off that way. Hopefully i can get it off.

Maybe then I'll put it back in the computer and try to format it. I could do with the extra space.

Thanks for the help...I'll let you know how i get on with the repair. I've replaced the tray drive belt with two pony tail rubber bands (!) maybe that will solve my opening/sliding issue. Hopefully I can get it all back together without too many left over parts!!!!!:)

Prediction: Those rubber bands will work so well, you'll never take it apart again!! :-D

Ubuntu is one of many "Open Source" programs that people have put together because they believe that software should be free. You might also like to take a look at OpenOffice, which is a free "equivalent" to MS Office, and is rapidly gaining acceptance around the globe. Some Dell computers now come with OpenOffice installed. See:

Rubber bands are working but the software is now saying data discs not supported. I just need to get the baby birthday videos off the damn HD!

I thought I could download it on to USB but it's not an option.

Scratch that...i found a disc that worked. Perhaps the others had been formatted for PC...we might be on the right track!

OK I got the video off the DVDr onto DVD. :-D

Now I have the dilemma of trying to keep the DVDr running or flagging it and putting the HD back in the PC.
