    I got a wd hd and did a clean install of my pc. I deleted both the C and D hd disk then installed everything on the C drive (my primary Drive). I'm up and working. Now I tried to install the wd, D Drive and I can't. I tried using hte wd floopy disk software DAta LIfeguard tools version 2.6 and it failed to place a file format on the D drive.
    So, I tried to go through disk managent in the my computer --> manage section. First, it shows the C drive as a basic drive (is this what it should be on a windows xp PRofessional xp2 OS?)
    Second, it ask if I want D drive to be basic or dynamic, and I have no clue what is what and what does what? Also, is this how i should be getting my hd up and running correctly on win xp pro or am i wrong?

    In addition: when i used data lifeguard i got a message that stated that it checked the c drive and found no fat partition so had to make d a partial fat 16 one then I would be able to format the rest as ntfs or fat. It also asked if I had windows nt 4 or if I wanted to install it, this part I can't fully recall, but it was to that effect.

    PLEASE, PLEASE HELP!!!

    So, to clarify (more for my own benefit);

    You have 2 HDDs.
    You want XP on one and the other for storage.
    You have to format and partition your secondary HDD.

    Your primary HDD seems to be functioning (otherwise how would you be running XP?) :)

    To format your secondary HDD use disk management. First, format the drive.
    Create a logical drive (not primary, this is for putting an OS on). Then create an extended partition on the logical drive. :)

    what do u mean create a logical then an extended on the 2nd drive. Could u clarify.
    all that u said is correct, by the way. Much more clarity than my expalination.

    okay i get where i go and all that. I do have a disk 1 which is the 2nd or d hd that i want to create. it is shown as disk 1 and ask if i want to make a new volume is that what i would do? cause i have no idea what u guys are saying wiht logical and extended drive? the only other thing i see is wether i am supposed to make a basic or dynamic drive, and i don't know the difference?

    I take it your D drive is shown in Disk Managment for this to show and it has possibly no file format set thus the question Basic or Dynamic?

    Basic is the option for you to take.

    Difference, well I was going to type out my answer but found the explanation at MS anyhow http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q314343

    in easy to chew format Basic is the normal way for you to use your HD, Dynamic will span free space across a few HDs a-la Raid format, worst thing is with this format, if something goes wrong you cannot get back to basic from dynamic, you will have to format all HDs.

    yeah it looks like that. i see now that i should probably stick to basic cause i think that's what i had before. gonna use this area to make it ntfs type and see it that will do it, so i can start using it for storage. Thank u all.
