Does a HD have an average life in hours?
Yes they had manufacturers guides of MTBF ( Mean Time Between Failure ) average is 1million hours of modern HDs, but like everytjing in life they are just an estimation as you cannot plan for the unxepected.
Link with enough equations to keep a mathmatician happy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Failure_rate
good drives can last over 10 years, they usually fail between 5-10 years though.
Seagates I believe have 5 yr warranty
Most other Major brands are 3 yr
You can run as many hours as you wish within the warranty or RMA
But it must be rembered even with mathematical life expectancy equations they will not account for variation in the maunfacturers, raw products, labour and or quality control measures. So occasionally you will have one just die!
