Oh, thy mighty and friendly MG's, can thy be of advice?
Sorry, felt a bit inspired ;)

I have bought a new MoBo for my PC, a new video card and got home with an HD I didn't quite ask for (noticed it too late).

Husband and I have been rebuilding his pc (HD failed totally few days ago, thankfully mine is still hanging on), and decided to both get a new HD.
He got a WD Caviar Green (1 TB), and the other turned out a SeaGate Barracuda st1000dm003 (1 TB).

Question is now: Is it a good idea, to trade in the SeaGate for the same WD as my hubby has?

If anyone has any advice: a BIG thank you in advance :clap

Based on both user ratings and personal experience, I'd get rid of the WD Green series drive and return it for the Seagate if possible. If you want to stick with Western Digital, get the Black series - it's more reliable and has a 5 year warranty.

    Hi

Just a bit of different thinking on this I have in that I tend to not mind as much on speed of large HDDs as WD or Seagate are much of a muchness and in reality you will not notice a difference.

However if you are re-building a PC then think of going for a SSD for the main drive and using the WD/Seagate 1TB for storage.

    WD Black are very good.

We have the WD in use as is, (old HD failed totally, so no choice and stores aren't open until Tuesday), hubby uses it as maindrive. Currently running Windows - for the time being, going to switch to Ubuntu, just have to figure out what games will run, and how. That's a different story though anyway.

The SeaGate is not in use - yet. We had a Barracuda before (though we both can't remember what series it was), and it surrendered life within just 3 months. Hence my weariness about it. This incident is over a year ago though, and I don't know, if they 'solved' the problem with newer releases of those HDs. I can't find much info on that subject at all. The reviews, however, are even more confusing.

For me, the HD will be used a lot, I am going to use it for storage of my photo's, music, games and editing software (I am creative :p ). Most likely, it will run as a main drive for a while, too. My old HD is failing - again, and no idea how long it'll last.

Reliability is very important to me, and since I cannot find much info that is if use, I decided to see, what info could be found here.

I'm in agreement with both gman863 and DavidGP. The SSD would give you a considerable speed increase. But as far as reliability, I'd use the Seagate you have and not the WD Green series. WD Blacks are the best of the WD drives but, I'm running a WD Blue series and haven't had any problems with it even though I've "put it through the wringer".;)

Am still a bit cautious with these HDs.. we've been unlucky last couple of times.. 2TB Seagate: dead. 2 TB WD: dead. My own 5 year old Samsung: Peachy.

Been discussing this with a friend as well, and he had all sorts of HDDs and a legion of brands and models (die hard gamer, seriously *giggles*). He told us, that it either goes well, or goes wrong - no matter what brand.

I guess, I could give it a whirl, I back up my important files / photo's often anyway, so should be okay. Checked Seagate's warranty checker, and it has warranty until June 2016.
