Hd question???

Hi, I am Hector,I buy a 500 gb to install in my son's pc, so i have the old 500gb,I have a 150 gb on MY pc now, My questions is: can I install the 500 gb in my pc and formate from there? can I pass all my 150 gb hd to the 500 gb and formate the 150 gb after? so all my files now in the 150 will be installed in the 500 and the 150 will be empty, I wanna know if I can do this in my running pc, and if it is possible, how to do it?

Hi Hector

Yes you can and a way of doing this is to run an Imaging/Cloning application which copies the source HDD completly, its a great way to backup a PC, but can be used to do what you want.

Applications to use are Acronis True Image 2010 (15day trial) or the free Easeus ToDo

Steps would be

1. Install the 500GB hdd and format it in your current PC (if its an IDE drive then set the jumper to slave, if SATA then no need)
2. Install one of those applications I mentioned and make the bootup disk when asked, can use a re-writable CD or DVD
3. Then follow this if using Easeus ToDo HERE
4. then you may need to go into your BIOS to change the boot order of the HDDs so that it boots from the 500GB one.
5/ Format the 150GB drive using Windows option in My Computer, right click the 150GB drive and choose format.

I would also urge you to backup any important files to another source as in USB HDD or DVD, nothing is ever perfect and things happen so backups are important, also what I would do is not to format the 150GB drive just yet, just unplug the power adn IDE/SATA cable and make sure the 500GB one works ok and boots fine, plus all your files etc are ok, then re-plug it in and format.
