HD speed

No Problem, just curiousity. I have 2 HDs. Both are 7200rpm Seagates. 1 is 80GB, the other is 160GB that has been made into 2 (1st is 107GB, 2nd is the balance.) Question I have is, :confusedwhy does one take longer to access files,folders, launch apps,etc.(up to 5 seconds longer). Both have identical contents (one is bootable clone of the other).

 

My only theory (if the have identical contents) is that the data is on different areas of the HDD. This can happen because of the partitioning (I believe, not 100% sure how data is stored because of partitioning). If I am right, the partition your Data is on may be storing that Data on the outside of the HDD, which takes longer to access.

Like I said before, it's only my theory on the issue. I could be dead wrong.

 

hello Senlis. Same amount of used disk space shows up on Properties, Defrag picture is identical. Like I said, there is no problem with this, but I am just curious. Seems that they should be the same in performance.

 

I know the defrag picture on the partition is identical, but is that the same as the physical location on the HDD? Could the 53GB partition be using the inner area of the platters and the 107GB be using the outer. If that is the case, the 107GB is 1/3 of the platter away from the center.

 

Me again. I use Ultimate Defragger which shows as a graphical (circular) display while working. As near as I can tell,without having both displays side by side, both appear to be in same position on disk.
