my dell desktop is about 5 or 6 years old. runs and drives fine. dell has a monster desktop on sale cheap but it has win 11 on it which i don't like . it uses the same hd that my existing dell does. can i just buy this new one and swap out the hd and end up with my same system but with much better hardware ? lets assume that there are some hardware drivers that would go missing... i assume i can just re-download those from dell ?

No. It doesn't work that way. Your first problem will be Windows activation. It will fail. The second is that Dell and it's suppliers are not going to have Windows 7 drivers for their new hardware. You might get lucky and some of the old or generic Microsoft drivers might work. Maybe.

    Dell make and model please.

stvsxm, please listen for a minute

Of course you can, it's yours to do with as you pleaes.
You are overlooking the chipset drivers, the usb drivers, and all the integrated hardware drivers for display, sound, ethernet etc...

Your"much better hardware" isn't built for Windows 7.
And Win7 won't bring them to peak performance.

Why not just leave the new box the way it is, open it up and plug in your old hard drive as well.
It will configure and you will have a new drive show up.
You can even set things up to display a list of which operating system you want to load at startup.

Solid state hard drives, a 3.2 USB port; etc... these are the things that go 200 miles an hour in your new computer.
By the sound of it this is the stuff you're looking for.
    Windows 7 can't do it.
I think Windows 8 might be able to do some of it , but I haven't looked into it .

    I had a '72 chevelle which I really liked.
But one day they stopped selling regular gas at the corner.
I had to sell the car and get one that ran on unleaded.

So you're driving down the highway going 60 and life is good.
And you're thinking about buying a car that goes 200.
Why would you take the motor out of it and put one in that only goes 60, and you can't even buy gas for it?
