HD Videos on a MacBook Air?

I'm in the market for a new laptop.

I would like something that is very portable and can also play HD Movies on my 37" HDTV.

I own serval Apple products(iPhone, iPad, AirPorts, etc) so I believe Mac would be a good choice.

But I have not used OS X before so I don't know if HD Videos(MKV/MP4) would cause me problems or if it would work with a HDMI/Thunderbolt setup.

With all that do you think the 11 inch MacBook Air would be a good choice?

I see some refurbished from Apple for under $1000.

    Thanks for your advice!

But then I keep second guessing myself :)

For about $200 more I can get a MacBook Pro with 8gb of ram, a 2.4GHz i5 cpu and an HDMI port.

I think it's worth it but I've heard the high res Retina Display causes some performance issues.
    Anyone have experience with this?

Its only an issue if you play games and even then just on the low end one.

What you need to ask yourself is, does the MBP offer enough utility and function for you to justify going to it instead of the Air?

You might also want to look at the Macbook (non-Pro).

I see a MacBook Pro at 2.4 GHz and another at 2.6 GHz for $50 more.

    Will 0.2GHz make any difference?

Are you number crunching or editing/rendering video? Gaming? probably not for what you listed in the first post :)

I have my MacBook Pro but now I'm having the same problem with HDMI as I had on my PC.

When I connect the TV to my MBP the picture does not fit right, so I tried to adjust the under-scale but the display still looks pixelated.

It's the same problem that i've always had with HDMI but if I use the RGB connector on my PC then the picture looks perfect so I know there is no problem with my TV.
Also every other HDMI device works well with my TV so I don't understand.

Any reason why my computers don't work with my TV using HDMI?

    Thanks for everyone's help.

I connected my MBP to the TV with a VGA-Thunderbolt adapter.

But it only gives me 800x600 & 1280x1024 as my resolution options.

Everything looks good at 1280x1024 minus that the icons and the whole screen look a bit squished.

Is there anyway to fix this?
I don't know why is so hard to connect my computers to a tv screen :(

I installed the app "Display Menu' from the app store and I was able to set the resolution to 1280x768 85.0 Hz
    Now everything looks good.

    Stupid Apple :p
