Would I have any problems putting the HDD on the master connector and the DVD drive on the slave connector?

I only have one cable and don't feel like buying another one.

It'll work. You have to read the drive documentation or look for a diagram on the drive itself to no where to set the jumper.

Also your HDD will work at the DVD speed meaning slower. Why waste your time for this but it's yours to waste.
