If it is not recognised in the Bios, you have a deadhard drive- When dropped it can make the arms jump, and stick, and the sounds are just that happenning.
Possibilty- find identical hard drive, and strip and change the discs- really a specialist job.
Basically you have trouble, but, other than getting a data recovery company, chances are slim.
Last resort method--If kept in a cool place for a while, ( actually wrapped up, and put in the freezer for a few hours in antistatic wrapping, and a towel) , then allowed to reach room temperature ) and then attached to another computer, it might just run for a short time.- rarely worked fror me, but just occasionally I got lucky.
LAST DITCH - HOLD ABOUT 150MM ABOVE A FLAT SURFACE AND DROP IT AS FLAT AS POSSIBLE TO THE SURFACE - MIGHT JUST JOLT IT BACK TO ALLOW LEVER INSIDE TO WORK FOR A SHORT TIME
PLEASE NOTE: ALL THESE METHODS ARE ENTIRELY AT YOUR OWN RISK AT YOUR OWN RISK- IF VALUABLE DATA- GET A SPECIALIST TO RECOVER YOUR DATA

OP says drive never hit the floor. On this basis it is entirely possible that the drive itself is fine and and the casing/cables are knackered. Before you try freezeing or dropping onpen up the external HD casing and install HD inside your desktop (assuming you have a tower) as an internal drive and see if you can read it. If you only have a laptop then you will need an external adapter to plug into.

If the drive hit the floor then im inclined to agree its dead but it might be worth trying the above first. In my experiance the HD case fails before the drive.

If the drive is recognised by BIOS but not visible in windows then drive is probably OK and you may be able to recover using testdisk or similar.

    Lot of info there. sorry

As TUEUR said, it is worth taking out of the cady, and trying in another caddy, or, connect internally, if yours is a desktop, as a slave- or, in another computer to see if it is recognised before trying last ditch efforts- in case it is the connection, or, internal part of the caddy that was damaged.
