I am adding a new hard disk and will install windows XP on it. The hard disk that I currently have has 98se on it. Can I set the old hard disk jumper to the slave mode as a secondary drive and will the new XP OS be able to read the files so that I can copy them to new folders on the new XP OS?

The best solution depends on what you want to do, ultimately, with your old hard drive.

Simplest solution is to leave the jumpers as they are. Install XP on your new drive, as a slave drive. As part of the XP installation, it will ask you if you want a dual boot system. Answer YES and continue with the install until it finishes. Once XP is installed, as a dual boot system, you will be able to access your 98se files through XP, but not vice versa, unless you format XP as Fat32. (not recommended with today's big gig hard drives).

Your PC will, on bootup, ask you what OS you want to use. (98se or XP).
If you do nothing it will boot/default, into XP. You can elect to use 98se at this stage by selecting 98se over XP.

Remember XP can read 98se, but 98se cannot read XP, under the recommended (NTFS) setup.
