    Hey all,

I just reinstalled windows 8 after it decided not to boot anymore. I couldnt figure out why, so i just reinstalled it.

After the fresh install, the HDD light comes on every 45 seconds or so and just stalls the entire system. The whole thing freezes and hangs, and as soon as the light goes out, everything resumes at normal speed. This has been driving me crazy.

The performance monitor just says its from the system, it has my disk running at 100% for 5-10 min at a time with a short drop every so often and then it spins right back up.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance

To start off with, how old is this system, how old is the hard drive? What is the make & model of the hard drive?

The hard drives are western digital. Probably about 5 years old. The rest of my setup has been recently upgraded.

Need model number. If they are five years old, time to replace due to they are going bad. SSD's are going anywhere from $0.79/gb to $1.50/gb, depending on the model & manufacturer.

I have had hard drives go bad in two years, due to electrical surges and bad power supplies.

You might get lucky and WD may replace the drives, so check with them first what they could do as for replacing them. But at this point with 1TB platter drives for less than $80 these days, it is really up to you what you do.

Discontinued line, only 160gb at that for both models. Looks like new hard drives are in your future. Personally I would go with SSD for the main or even both, vs. Platter drives. That model only had at min. 2 year warranty, 3 year max.

Again, you can now get 1TB platter drives for under $90 if SATA.
