I have a comcrap desktop and the hdd locks always no specific reason not bios, software, virus got a replacement from compaq same problem works fine with a generic third party hdd though strange just wanted to see if anyone has run into this before.

First question is, have you updated the Bios? There are also some known issues with HP and Compaq systems not playing nicely with SP2. I would start by running the machine in [SAFE] mode and see if it still locks up while doing a Defrag and such. Locking up can be caused by anything such as heat to a bad cable on the drive.

Here is the Driver info page for that machine if you need it: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...areCategory&lc=en&product=424182&cc=us&os=228

i'm assuming this means that it will post but will not load the os!!?? Is the bios recognizing the hdd?? Are there any errors like...no OS found, or something to that effect?? Or is it trying to load the OS but failing?? If it is recognizing the drive but will not load the os...maybe the boot record on the drive is screwed up!! If you can boot to the windows install cd...try running a repair install, that way it will repair windows but won't harm or lose any other valuable stuff on the disc, as opposed to formatting and a new install!! Are you firmiliar with this!!

What brand is the drive...maybe we can download a diagnostic tool from the drive manufacturer that will tell if there is anything wrong!!

Getting bad replacement parts the second time does happen, but it's not like it's the norm.

So when you got this new replacement...did you start from scratch by installing a new fresh install of windows, with nothing else on it, or did you mirror the old drive onto the new one??
