    Hi All
I have put in a new hdd as a slave to the C;/ drive using the slave clip or connection on the same IDE ribbon, I have also taken out the jumper pin leaving the pins bare.
My problem is, the new drive does not show when I click my PC, while the drive that I have replaced did.
I also have a hdd on the CD/DVD ide ribbon and that shows up ok, and the C drive also shows ok but not the new hdd in the slave position. I have looked in the BIOS and all three hdd drives show up in there.
    Have I done something wrong.
    Regards Robert.

Hi and welcome to Major Geeks :) Firstly look on the top of your hard Drive on the piece of white paper and you will see the Jumper settings written there so you choose Jumper setting 'Slave' (if it says no jumper = Slave then you have done correctly) and the middle connector on your ribbon should be attached to this HD. Then fire up and if it still does not show in Windows try the following ....
Go to Control Panel/Computer Management/Storage/Disk Management then you should see it there then right click and Format...Then reboot and it should show in Windows. If you are a bit unsure there is a Help section on that page.
Any complications please post back and most of all if you are succesful reply so others can see how you achieved it.

Hi Toke, My thanks for your warm welcome and prompt reply.
The new hdd is a Seagate 250gb that I will use for storage " my photos etc " & the diagram did not show a jumper for the slave setting, and the hdd that I am replacing also worked ok without a jumper, I am on XP Pro & I have looked in My PC and couldn't find PC Management, so I clicked System/Hardware/device Manager/ and the hdd drives are all shown in there, when I click the Seagate the menu puts up 5 options " Update Driver> Disable > Uninstall > Scan for hardware changes > and Proprties " > when I click on properties I get the driver info etc, I never saw a format option.
Thanks for your help, regards Robert.

Hi Tyler, as Toke said you have to look in Control Panel.

    So Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Storage>Disk Management.

Your new drive should show with 200+gb of unallocated space. You would want to right-click the unallocated space and create 1 or more partitions. Say, 150gb for music and 75gb for photos or whatever. Then right click on the newly created partition(s) and select Format. Accept the defaults for NTFS takes a minute or two and then the formatted partition should show in My Computer.

    *****
If you've never been in Control Panel you may have to switch to Classic View to see the Administrative Tools icon.

    Hi Sach2
SUCCESS!!! many thanks, once I was guided to Admin Tools I was away, and I have now formated the drive and already transfered many folders of photod onto it, my next task is to wipe the 80gb disk I was using for storage and reload Windows onto it which I am going to do right now, so many thanks to you both.
    Regards Robert.

Congrats! :) I see there was a typo in Toke's post sending you looking for Computer Management instead of Admin Tools. Ah, easily done. Glad you got things sorted.

    Hi Guys
Since our last contact I have carried out your distructions, and I have re formatted the disks, I next re loaded Windows onto the cleaned 80gb disk and reloaded many of my saved favourite programs back onto Windows, I next then transfered all my folders to the 250gb storage disk in an orderly fashion (I like to be methodical) H'o H'o, so now I am once again, a going concern!!
Computering is still in its infancy and there are so many bad guys and sicko's out there trying to spoil or fun we need all the help from the (good guys) we can get, people like myself appreciate the help and advice from the forums, its just that when you get to silver surfing age the problem is retaining it and then you need another push in the right direction.
I do like this site and I am pleased and proud to now be a Geek :-D so many thanks for your help and best regards Robert.

i have a similar problem: my new Saegate Serial ATA HD is formatted and I cloned my old drive onto it with Acronis software. The Seagate shows up in "My Computer" and in "disk management" but I am unable to get it to boot. The HD does not show up in the BIOS settings.
I added this to a 4 year old Sony Viao the had two IDE drives connected to it. The Seagate is connected via a PCI card adapter. Adapter divers are loaded. Not sure what to do next.

    Hi Jharg
Maybe sach2 and Toke can help?

I'm not to clever myself, I found out that the hdd needed formating first before reloading the Operating System onto it, if your new hdd is used as the primary drive check the jumper is set to Master, and if you are using it as a Slave on the same IDE ribbon take the jumper out.
I think you can go into the BIOS and add the drive manually but I'm not sure how to do it.
Hope you find the help you need, if nobody comes back in this thread try putting it as a new thread, this is a friendly and helpful site and I'm sure someone will help you.
    Regards Robert.
