HDD not recognized when I install my secondary.

My problem is not occurring when i use a single HDD but when I install my secondary, I change jumper settings, it will goto a black screen and say 'Operating System not found' and when i uninstall the secondary its miraculously works. I dont know what I am doing. I know there in the correct master/slave format. I need some help please.

 

You need to make sure first that the jumpers are totally correct, sometimes people think that they are puting jumpers in the right way and it is totally wrong
You need to read how to do that from what is written over your secondry hard drive, and make sure to follow the number of every pin 1,2,3,4,5,6,8
Sometimes people put the jumper from the opposite side depending on 8,7....etc
So read well where exactly your number one pin is
And if you finally sure every thing is good and still not working.
If you are puting your drive as a secondary slave, try to put it as a primary slave and if it is primary slave try to change to a secondary slave.
If this did not work.
Take the cable of your CDROM OFF and put your hard drive instead as a secndary Master and see what happens.
And before all that make sure that you are puting your IDE cable correctly in the back of your hard drive and watch the notch.
This could be also the problem

Also ... make sure that your primary drive is set to Primary Master ... not "cable select" or "solo drive" or "slave"

 

I believe the jumpers are correct. I have the Primary set correctly . (100% sure)Very clear instructions. But the secondary has 15-pin slave, 16-pin slave, Cable select, and Forcing Dev 1 present. It is a IBM Deskstar 40G. I will try to change the IDE between the CDROM later. Its Thanksgiving. Any more things to check?

 

Oh yeah and i have it set for 16-Pin slave right now. It works SOME times. I dont know why though.

 

You are indeed a brave man using an IBM DeskStar. I hope that you are not going to be putting any important info on it.

The reason I say this is because the Deskstar series was affectionately referred to at the time as the DEATHSTAR due to its disproportionately high failure rate.

I still have a 30Gb Deskstar but thankfully it is releated to my test system.

However, the jumper system on the back of those drives is to my simple mind about as clear as mud water. Have you been on to the manufacturer's website to make sure how it should be jumpered as there appears to be some doubt in your mind.

You are getting an 'Operating System not found' message. Have you gone into the bios to check that both HD are correctly detected (if need be do a manual redetection) and that you have the correct boot order.
