HDD Recovery Software

Ok, a friend of mine has had his HDD crash, and there's data on it he needs. Of course, he has no backups. I haven't seen it yet, so I'm not certain of the level of damage done to it I don't know if it is a mechanical failure or what.

I've got an old copy of PowerQuest Search & Rescue, but I know it doesn't work on NTFS. He's running XP, and he didn't even know the difference between NTFS and FAT. So I want to have a solution available -- even a commercial one to offer -- in case I need it.

I looked on PowerQuest's website, and they dont even seem to sell Search & Rescue anymore. What happened to it? Does anybody have any suggestions for good software to recover files from a damaged HDD?
