I got a message (critical error) which said the hdd might fail and asked me to back up data(i ignored it as i did not have a spare 320GB). Now my system gets stuck at win 7 splash screen (Starting Windows).. When I try to reinstall windows, it gets stuck at "Setup is starting..."

So I do have access to my HDD as it shows up at boot and the splash screen is loaded from it.. Can I restore the spoiled sectors or do i just have to replace it and loose all my data? :(

    Replace the hard drive.
After you have a new hard drive in and Win 7 loaded, you attach the old hard drive to the computer through a USB port after the computer has booted up. You might be able to see and copy your data from the failing hard drive to the new hard drive.

Connector to attach a hd through the USB port is similar to this

Note: If your hard drive is not SATA, this will not work. You need an IDE/SATA adapter.

Do I have to get the SATA to USB converter or can I just add it as a secondary data storage and retrieve data.. The hadd is being detected by the BIOS and programs like HDD regenerator, SpinRite etc.. but It does not show up when I try to browse from an OS(tried Ubuntu 12.10 and Win 7)
