Could you be more specific on what you're wanting to scan the hard drive for? Speed. errors, etc.

    Jassmin...

Whatever you use, it should be run from a boot disk. If you run a drive test in Windows, the results will be incorrect for your drive. This is because Windows will be competing with the program to read the drive...

This has numerous tools. Burn it to a CD/DVD and boot with it in the drive:

As AtlBo said, UBCD (Ultimate Boot CD) has tools for HDDs. But, I've run Victoria for Windows (attached) on my machine which has 4 HDDs connected at once.

    Jassmin...

Haven't used this UBCD. It looks similar to the ones I have, which are easy enough to use.

There are some dangerous tools in the ones I have and also some dangerous features in some otherwise straightforward programs I like to use on them. The HD scanner I have been using has a choice for wiping the hard drive. I hate it being there, but it keeps me on my toes when I am using the program that's for sure.

The best thing about this type of utility disk is the ability to access your files and move them to another drive if you are unable to boot into Windows. That makes it worth having one I believe. Anytime you have trouble with Windows, you have options for moving files and/or making repairs. There are tools for partitioning and creating backups, too (even image backups). Also, you have the testing programs, and you can run them straight from the disk without interference from Windows. Overall, a boot repair/recovery disk is great leverage against OS meltdowns or hardware malfunctions.

Seems like there used to be alot of recommendations for UBCD here at MGs. Someone with some experience with its best tools can probably help you out alot more than I could. Maybe you could post a new thread here in software about what to use on the disk. I know the list of programs on UBCD can be found on the developer's download site here:

I noticed that Memtest86+ is on the disk. That is useful for testing RAM memory and very helpful to have when a problem can't be diagnosed as software or a hard drive. Seems like all the hard drive manufacturers are represented with a diagnostics utility. Program list looks very good to me...

The version I linked you to is freeware, originally from 2008 but runs on anything from XP to Win 7 (I think it will run on Win 8/8.1 as well). The newer version IS shareware and as such, I suspect it has more capabilities.

It's trustworthy. If it wasn't, it wouldn't still be around. If it reports the drive as being OK, the drive's OK.:)
