Hdd too full

I am trying to repair install XP but dont have enough room on the hard drive. Trouble is that I cant get at the files on the hard drive to delete some of them I dont want to format the drive as there is some stuff on there I want to keep.

Any ideas?

reboot the system and as its starting tap F8 until you get a list of options. select Command Prompt Only. This will alow you access to your system via command system.

Note: Its very important that if you delete something in Command Prompt that it cannot be retrieved as there is no recycle bin.

 

It won't let me. As I have started to reload windows all it wants to do is continue with the reload. I think I will need some sort of utility to go in and read the hdd independant of XP.
Do you agree?

you can put that hard drive in another computer--then access the files and do as you wish.

ideally though, you shold back up what you need and do a full reformat, as it will be cleaner and quicker.

 

go ahead with the reinstal and install xp over your existing messed up copy. after it has finished installing your information will still be there.

 

that is his problem, setup doesnt have enough room to load the files needed to do a repair install..

 

Good idea. I will connect the hdd to my other computer and strip out some rubbish so that I can continue with the reload. Never thought of that!
