Can anybody at all offer me some reliable advice about what the hell I have to do to get HDTV files to play in ANY media player? Even VLC, which people rave about, cannot manage it. I've tried installing a whole load of new codecs, none of which have made any difference at all.

Is it that you need a seriously impressive piece of PC equipment to cope? Could somebody please offer a solution?

What file type are we talking here? .avi files or something else (extension plz)?
Files that do not play, usually do so because you do not have the proper codecs installed. To determine if the necessary codecs are installed on your system, open the file with GSpot.

I think it's a .avi file, except that there is no information when I click on 'Properties' or hover over the file. I have found various forums offering help and information about .ts files which are apparently the usual extension for HDTV files.

I didn't think there would be a problem with video cards. I use a Radeon 256mb card with a Celeron 2.8Ghz processor, 512mb RAM and plenty of hard drive space. How much more would you need?

.ts (Transport Stream MPEG-2 Video Stream) files can be handled by VLC player. Still run GSpot though, because you're probably missing codecs.

To display file extensions: open explorer and select tools->folder options. Select the View tab and uncheck 'Hide file extensions for known file types'. Click OK. The file extension should be visible now.
