Hey, I just recently put in a new fan and power supply for my computer cause the old power supply got fried. I managed to get everything put back togeather and it booted up on the first try so I was relieved about that but for some reason now I hear this weird helicoptor static kind of sound coming across my speakers. I'm running windows xp home edition sp1. I've heard of something like this happening with mics where people can hear the noise in the background when you're talking so I think it might be related. The noise seems to start as soon as it goes from the screen where its loading windows xp with the green bar sliding across. The power supply I put in is a 420 watt but my old one was a 300 watt. The fan is just a blue LED fan I dont think it would be causeing it. Another thing Ive noticed is it seems to intencify the static if i move the mouse around and when I open and close diffrent windows. I dont really know what sound card I have, I think its a soundblaster. Ive tried replugging in the speaker cord and tried a new one and the minor things but they didnt seem to help. I apreciate your time and anykind of info you could give me would really help, I tried looking for something on google but didnt find much.

Do you have a cordless mouse and/or keyboard?? I'm not much on audio, but...I know some of the recievers for them cordless devices have to be a certain distance from a monitor, or tower, etc.!! My friend had a similar problem and after moving the reciever...the feedback went away!!

I had a power supply catch fire on me once (what a disaster that was, it killed both of the hard drives in it). It also took its toll on the motherboard, it didn't kill it though, it caused what is called an "upset error." The system would randomly reset on me. The processor (P3 650 Mhz) would only operate at 550 Mhz and lower, and would reach temps of 186°F+(in the BIOS). What you might be experiencing is an "upset error."

I also once owned a computer computer with an Aureal Vortex 3D sound card with the same problem, the problem was resolved when I bought a new sound card.

This explination though is most likely (or not):
My current system has an onboard sound card and a headphone jack on the front of the system. The pin header for this jack is in the back of my system; the wires going to the front of the system are unshielded and run right pass the chipset, cpu, and memory. These wires pick up a LOT of noise. I can easily hear this static noise you are mentioning, and it intensifies when I do the same things you explained. This is because the jack picks up a lot of the system's noise and the noise intensifies because the system works hard at those times. I recomend you move any cables near the sound card away from it (if possible) and the cable going the drives off of the card away from other components. See if this works first.

try going to the sound control panel>audio tab>under default devices>volume and mute all the inputs that you are not using such as CD Audio/Line in/S-PDIF, etc .. if that works... shut them off cause there's no point in having them on if you don't use them and are having problems with them
