So my new DELL Laptop came in TODAY.
in the morning the internet was pretty good, but now it is really really really slow. I tried 3 different browsers (IE, Google Chrome, Safari) but its the same thing
Im using wireless internet and im literally 2m from my router, WHATS GOING ON?
The Internet bar is 5 bars, and yet its still doing this
I got an i5 processor, 4gb of ram and yet its still pissing me off
my laptop is the new DELL 15R
like it takes 20-25 seconds for the homepage to come up
    WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF HELP

The 5 bars is your signal strength from your laptop to your router but does not mean your internet is working or not working. There could be a problem with your ISP, but I would start by power cycling (turn off/unplug) your modem and then your router, this tends to fix a lot of issues for me.

Another thing to try is to ping your home page from the command prompt

    1. click start, then run
    2. enter "cmd" and click ok
    3. enter "ping <url>" and hit enter
    example: ping www.google.com

I've noticed that I start getting packet loss when my internet slows down. That's usually when I power cycle my modem and router.

Try connecting wired to the router. I bet that it was running some background processes for updates, etc. You were not happening to be running any torrents, were you? That can slow stuff down. Go to Speakeasy.net/speedtest and post back what you upload & download were.

    Congrats on the new laptop!

What anti-virus / firewall is it running?

if you ctrl-alt-delete to get the task manager up, what does the process % look like? If you got it today, especially if you got it from that kick butt outlet, the laptop might be trying to load every update on the planet at once. I suspect it's possible the computer started great but as the day went on, more and more programs starting checking for updates and finding them. Some could be quite large.

Also, did you set up a cloud account for data storage with Dell? I haven't used it but there could be some initial setup and syncing that needs to be done at the first connection.

With Windows 7, you do not have to do the ctrl-alt-del, since you just place your mouse cursor on the Task bar, and right click to bring up the menu, then choose "Start Task Manager".

    Thanks dude!
I have windows defender on (just got it nothing other than that)

    Processes: 84
    CPU Usage: 0-1%
    Physical Memory: 28%

I got it straight from DELL

and no i didnt set up a cloud account, and i supposed to?

As with many commonly used window functions, there is more than one way to access it. The task bar method existed in XP as well.

Dell has a really nice outlet online. Bought some average and one amazing geek dream system there (it has 48gb of ram and a $3K video card for 3D rendering, we take the cover off to ohh and ahhh -- half price in the outlet!)

Cloud storage was being pushed as a free feature not long ago but NO you don't have to set up a cloud.

Have you seen any improvement or change in your internet speed since posting this?

Have you run a test of your connection as Brownizs suggested? I'm curious how it tests versus what your rated speed is. You can try Speedtest.net. Wait for the map to load and click Begin Test to automatically pick the closest server. If you get a speed much different from your rating, try the test to a different server location to see if it's consistently slow. If you post the results and your rated speed back here, we might have some further suggestions.

when i ping google its 32 bytes of data

i went on the website and it says my ping is 52, and 7.55mbps Download and .04mbps upload. [btw is that good?]

i see a tiny bit of improvement but it gets slow after a while.

    what else can i do?

Yeah, that's pretty nice, about 200 times faster than dial up:)
You should be streaming movies and zipping around at the speed and thought.

I would consider going into the network settings and entering the DNS there manually. Try 4.2.2.2 and see if that's any different.

Actually that is not good, especially upload. Who is your service provider for Internet? Also, have you tried shutting down the modem and router and all machines connected to the router, then in turn, turn on the modem, let it sync with the provider, then turn on the router, and let it do its thing to sync with the modem. After all of that, then you can start turning back on machines, but I would try with just your new one first if it is wifi, that is okay.

As for posting your stats, you can copy and paste then info at the end on speedtest.net, when it finishes. This is what mine looks like, just so you can compare yours to my results. But again, your connection is doing something wrong, because your upload is pretty much non-existent. Also who is your provider, and what are the speeds that you are supposed to be getting?

The speed shown in the OP's poster test is bad? i wonder what you would say to the 3.23Mb/s that I am getting. Oh, that's right, I'm only paying for 3.0 so it's fine. I wouldn't call my connection "slow" using one laptop, i can stream and download just fine most of the time. The results are only bad if they aren't anywhere close to what you are paying. Upload is a little off but that can change at different times of the day and uploads aren't usually guaranteed. Mostly won't feel it unless trying to load something up to the net.

DrB, I'm completely plagiarizing these instructions. Try OpenDNS and see if it makes any difference for you.

    1. Open the Control Panel.

    2. Open up Network and Internet and go to the Network and Sharing Center.

    3. Click on Change adapter settings on the left hand panel.

    4. This will bring up a list of adapters present on your computer. Most people will have a Local Area Connection while laptop users will add a Wireless Network Connection and possibly a Bluetooth Network Connection...go ahead and right click on Local Area Connection and click on Properties.
NOTE: These steps do not change if you are modifying the Wireless Network Connection instead

    5. If prompted by UAC, click on Yes.

    6. Highlight Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click on properties.

    7. In the properties window you will see a few radio boxes with both of them saying Obtain an IP/DNS Address Automatically....we will leave the IP address alone and will change the Obtain DNS....to use the following:

In the Preferred DNS server boxes enter this sequence: 208.67.222.222

In the Alternate DNS server boxes enter this sequence: 208.67.220.220

    8. Check the validate settings upon exit (Optional) check box, click OK, and then Close to finish.

    9. Windows will check your settings (if you checked the option above) and you will be finished! Now start surfing to feel the effects of a quicker and more secure browsing experience!

Also, what kind of security are you using on the wireless and are there any other devices on the network?

Handy gal, he has no upload speed, or should I say he barely has any at four tenths of a true 1 meg. Yes he is showing a 7.6 download, but you need to look at the big picture. There is more at hand, than just saying that his speeds look great, when they are not. Something is wonky, as in he may not be using his connection, but somewhere else, or something a miss with the router connection.
