Hi there, my active desktop is on and I cant get it to turn off. I get this message:

    file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Tara/Application%20Data/Microsoft/Internet%20Explorer/Desktop.htt

Do you want to continue running scripts on this page. Ive clicked yes and no. I'm just not sure what this means. I just cleaned and fixed up my computer with help from the malware forum guys. It's running great besides this. Please help!!

Migrate to that file, via explorer, then delete "desktop.htt".

    Refresh the page.

Should be good to go. :)

Hi, thanks for the quick reply. When you say explorer, do you mean when I right click on the start menu and click on explore. I did that and searched my documents for that file and came up empty. Sorry I'm not a pro at computers but can get by. Thanks again :) I will be a very happy gal. Just tell me what to do, I'm your slave haha

    It is a hidden file.

Explorer you can start, by hitting the windows key + E, or, by:

Click START, then run, then type in:

    explore (press enter).

Or, by double clicking on "My computer".

Then you want to click on Tools, Folder options, then click on the "view" tab.
Next click the radial button "Show hidden files and folders".

    Now, search for the file.

Hi there, ok I unhid the files and did exactly as you said and no file is to be found. I searched for

    file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Tara/Application%20Data/Microsoft/Internet%20Explorer/Desktop.htt

    and also just desktop.htt

    nothing showed.

    Hmmm, what next

Incase I'm not on when you respond:
Home > Security > Active Desktop

    Disable Active Desktop (All Windows)

Open your registry and find the key below.
Create a new DWORD value named "NoActiveDesktop", and set the new value to equal "1" to enable the restriction or "0" to disable the restriction.

This restriction can be used either on a user by user basis by adding it to HKEY_CURRENT_USER or on a computer wide basis by adding it to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

    (Default) REG_SZ (value not set)
    NoActiveDesktop REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1)

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\...

    Registry Settings
    User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
    Explorer]
    System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
    Explorer]
    Value Name: NoActiveDesktop
    Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = disable restriction, 1 = enable restriction)

    Or:
    ENABLING/DISABLING ACTIVE DESKTOP (WIN XP)

    1. Open the Control Panel.
    2. Open Display Properties.
    3. Click the Desktop tab.
    4. Click the Customize Desktop button.
    5. Click the Web tab in the Desktop Items window.

If you wish to enable the Active Desktop, check "My Current Home Page". Add your current home page into your desktop or click New to add another web page and/or other Active Desktop features. To update the content, click the Synchronize button.

If you wish to disable Active Desktop, make sure all checkboxes in this window are un-checked."
