I joined your forum a year or two ago when I was learning how to clean my computer. This is an amazing site!

I have a monitor and computer question and I'm not sure where the best place to post this information is. I had a computer (desktop) and monitor - that I basically moved across the country in the back of a moving truck. I had stored it for a couple of months, but when I tried to use the computer it's really slow and the monitor is really shaky. Have I killed both of these items in the move? Is there any way to address the problems?

    Hi thankyouforhelpingme,
If you are comfortable with opening your comp up there are a couple of things you could do.
When you open it up, be sure to ground yourself on a metal part of the case before touching anything else. Then reseat all your components - RAM sticks, any cards - video, sound, ethernet, etc., check your connections to the hard drives, CD drives, etc. The move might have loosened something.
Then, you could do a general house cleaning with a can of air to get any dust out.
Try that and see what happens. If you still have problems, then post back in Hardware. Good Luck.

 I wonder about the voltage at the receptacle where you have your pc and monitor plugged in. I just wonder what you would get if you took the pc somewhere else and plugged them in and tried them. Just a thought.

There's a function in modern monitors called degauss. Push it once & see if the screen is better, assuming it's a CRT.

If they were moved in their original packaging, I don't see how they could get damaged unless they fell out of the truck on highways & created a major gridlock... ;)

I'll definitely try out your suggestions. The items were packaged in their original shipping - but they were also at the back of a big penske truck - which was fairly smooth but it was a long trip and the car I had towed in the back did some bouncing. If this is not effective, I'll try making another post in hardware. When comcast set up my service, the technician tried to degauss it and it didn't seem to work (yes, it's a CRT). Good thing I have a laptop. I don't think my eyes could take the stress of a shaky monitor. Thank you once again!
