Hi everyone, so I finally made it to apply for a forum - my first and I'm very nervous.

And of course I have a question, one I can not really allocate to any forum so far. Let me explain.

I legally own a CAD program for architects (that's me) which did run on a prehistoric computer - 486 and Pentium. Anyone out there who actually can remember these times?

Now I made the move into the 21 century and got myself a nice Pentium 4 and big surprise, the program does not work.

I contacted the support centre of the program and they just made fun out of me. I need to update to latest version as the program does not support the fast processors used today. No need to say that the update will cost a fortune.

Now my question, is there anyone who knows how to make a old DOS / Windows 3.5 program on a Windows XP / Pentium 4 computer working?

The program is called SPIRIT - sort of a CADDY CAD addition.

I appreciate your efforts and many greetings from South Africa.

    Enya

Hi Enya ( same name as one of my fav singers BTW ) and welcome to the forum, I have moved your post to the Software forum as this will be best and more noticed area for your question.

As XP doesnt really have full DOS compatability, yes it has as command prompt and a few commands but full compatability is just no their, so your CAD application may just not work, but you may just get it working in compatability mode for say Win95/98 its an outside chance.

So right click the programs .exe file and choose Properties > Compatability tab and tick the Compatability Mode box and choose from the drop down box Win95 and Apply.

If this application is old and if its a DOS based one it is likely to be, its possible that these days you "may" just find a free/cheaper alternative and in free I mean a fullly fledged CAD app with 2D/3D rendering and not the novice amature type applications, this option could be one if it meets your requirements and it does work in XP http://www.cycas.de/info.php?s=en#top offer their app for non commercial use but also commercial for a smaller price than that of I guess the upgrade to the one your currently using, the free version is limited but worth a test to see if its worth paying for the Pro version @ $248

there are likely to be others that have Pro based tools.

*as a side note its very sad to hear that you were badly treated by the support dept of that company, in making fun of you they just I bet lost a customer and potential new business if you do need to update.
