    Greetings, mfinnt.

Do I copy that you have a CD/DVD drive, but it's not working? Is it appearing in My Computer? If so, are there any flags being shown in Device Manager?

no on flags , but it has stoped working after i was foolish enough to not get in touch with G data for a removal tool
let me ask this --should i roll back -- or reinstall --would like to do a re install since i have a better and larger hdd
if i install the new ( 7200 rpm ) will it be recognized on the clean install ( boot from cd )

i found the app ( didn't open it ) just right clicked on the whole program
did same under local_machine n current_ user that is when i lost my cd/dvd drive

To verify: you have a new hard drive, and you wish to install Windows on this new drive?

First of all, I'd suggest you select 'Boot from CD first' in your startup options, insert your Windows CD, and verify that the machine will boot to the disk.

If this looks good, then shut down and unplug the machine, install your new hard drive, boot to the Windows disk, format the drive and install Windows.

Because the Windows disk is a bootable disk.

If your optical drive is able to boot to the Windows disk, then there is probably a 3rd party software(s) that is causing your problem - I'd suggest going ahead with your HD install and reinstall of Windows.

Good luck, and keep us posted. :major

    .

EDIT: sorry, didn't see your post in time - Agreed: get a new optical.

With the new optical drive, you should be able to boot to the Windows disk, format the new HD, and reinstall Windows.
