Hello! I'm having a "ntldr is missing"...

Greetings! My emachine has the preceeding error message at startup. I can get to the boot menu. It's xp home, phoenix v6,

I tried a downloaded boot cd, didn't work. All cables are hooked up. Just before this happened I upgraged ms office from 2000 to 2003. Before this happened the time was also wrong, so I replaced the cmos battery inside since this happened, as a precaution.

Any ideas? Forums give such general info sometimes it's really hard for poser geeks like me to sound smart. So do I sound lucky?

The error message you are having is common and can be fixed fairly easily.What you need to do is this:

I've seen that posting, & googled, etc. I made an iso cd, put it in the cd drive, and enter boot setup.

boot menu:
select a boot first device
>removable
-floppy disks
>hard disk -first master #####
>cdrom -2nd master: #####
-2nd slave: lite-on ltr
Legacy LAN

or I can get into the setup boot area to:

boot device priority where i set the priority to floppy, cd, etc. ??

Should I whack it with the salad shooter?

1. Are you sure you have made a copy of a valid, legal XP CD?

2. You need to boot from CD-ROM in the boot menu.

3. Hammer is better than a salad shooter!

I only made a boot disc for xp from

which doesn't boot the machine. Luckily my laptop is working so I can do some diagnosis. The xp only has a number on the tower, no restore cd, which is part of the problem. This started when I updated office 2000 to 2003. Anyway, I dearly appreciate the help.

Hello, Collinsl, for some reason I'm not getting your answers to show up on my screen. At least it looks like you've answered. I had trouble figuring out how to find the last one also. I'm not very forum savvy, along with other things. Anyway, my disc still doesn't boot the machine, and I've tried booting from every offered position.
In the link refer to earlier is a list of the many failing which could be the root of this issue, however, the update of office is my suspect. Does that help?

Hello! I've logged in by the link I found in my email but I don't see the answer in the email, but thanks for the kind reply. Unfortunately I don't have the original xp cd. And I've been through the forums which tell me to change files in my root drive, whatever that is.

I made a boot cd, and set the boot order as directed at the site in the link already posted, floppy primary, cd secondary. I've also tried booting in all the areas offered with no result. In both the boot menu, and in the phoenix setup area with no results.

Just to let you know, my last answer was at 22:36GMT yesterday.

You probably need to request a recovery CD from Emachines, unless a friend has a valid XP disc for you to borrow. Make sure you ask emachines for a CD with XP on if you need it.
