I posted in the malware and now I am here. I am helping my mother who just got a new computer that she bought from someone. Anyways she is totally new and I am to. Anyways we did the proper scanning hopefully. And I am tring to download and remove bad stuff and good stuff. I have c: and c: program files that have a bunch of folders and files that are either empty, or most of them I just dont know what they are or do.. and is maybe useless? I was wondering how and if I can get rid of folders? Doesnt everytime you download or do something online.. it make a folder and put stuff in it, and if you get rid of it the folder still stays for whatever reason. I dont know? Anyways to cleaning out folders/files to open space. Also what should I put on her computer. Its pretty empty empty and I am going to remove programs that are from the old owner.. that we will not be using.. after the malware scans come back okay. So what does she need to do for a new computer.. make sure things update? Make sure things got the proper files.. something about.net came up but thats in malware section I posted it.. I got firefox and internet explorer, and java and some thing called winrar needed to be downloaded. What does she need so She wont run into problems? And how can she and me get rid of files and folders without causing harm.. and some folders are labled numbers and letters.. that dont make sense.

The best way to remove programs you don't need, is to go to the Control Panel, and use the Add/Remove Programs menu. The worst thing you can do is to go to drive C: and start deleting folders. DO NOT remove ANYTHING in this manner. Once you have some PC experience under your belt, you can remove folders at will from where-ever you want, but unless you know EXACTLY what you're deleting, you shouldn't remove anything this way. If there's a bunch of leftover stuff in My Music and in My Pictures, you can send 'em to the Recycle Bin to remove them, but programs should be removed via Add/Remove Programs. The .NET message you saw is a legit Microsoft program, but if you saw a message, there may be something wrong with it, or something is looking for it.....
