Hello. New laptop is still in the box. I am completely without a clue about how to deal with it. Do I need wireless? Or will my ordinary Time Warner Cable work with it, the same one I've used with my old computer?

    Hi :)

You should be able to just take it out of the box and turn it on and it'll walk you through set up.

As far as internet, you can hook it up the way you had your old computer. Did you have that plugged in to a modem? If you'd like wireless, which would give you the opportunity to have your laptop anywhere, you might be able to call your provider and have them come and install a wireless router.

Does the laptop have an ethernet jack? If so, the easiest first step is to unplug the cable from the old computer and plug it into the new laptop. Turn off the power to the Time Warner cable modem. This is to erase its memory. It has a memory of the MAC (machine address code) of the NIC card in the old computer. You want it to see your new computer and allow you to connect to Time Warner's servers and the internet. After the power to the modem has been out for a minuter, you can plug it back in and wait for the lights to indicate it is ready. Then turn on your laptop and connect to the internet.

If it is the only computer in the house, you don't need to do anything more. If you want to roam with the laptop inside your home, you might want to purchase a wireless router which will allow you to do this.
