I was being helped in another forum for malware removal and I have followed all those steps and finally they gave my machine a clean bill of health. However, I am still having slow net problems. TimW, who was a great help to me, suggested that I post the issue here. I have read several threads through to see they had an answer already but what I'm experiencing is odd.

I saw in one thread that you suggested that they run a speed test.

here are my machine specs first off:

have a windows XP HP version 2002 Service Pack 2 (although this is not on my system- I can't download it or SP3 it stops in the middle of downloading)
HP CPU 1.70 GHz 1.69GHz 128MB of RAM (and that is 89% in use)

Anyway, I did that speed test and tried to upload the link here, and I even tried to post here last night but once again my net flacked on me and I couldn't do that it. I got an error page.

Today, this afternoon, my net seems to be working fine, faster even. But then after some use it just slows down, I don't have anything open, I'll just come back later and try to get logged on and it is super slow, like it takes 2-5 minutes to open a page and some pages will freeze and I get the error loading page.

My sister used my computer and plays yahoo Eucher using sun java and I notice that after that it slows down, she also leaves yahoo messenger open, don't know if that is a problem. Maybe it is my memory,

Before I cleaned my system out of all the malware and virus it took like 10 -15 minutes to open a page.

Here is the test results from the speed test. Any help you can give me would be very appreciative. Thanks.

you really need more ram. things might work with that amount of ram, but the more items you have open (ie - antivirus program, internet browser, etc), the more sluggish things will be. this could also have an effect on your internet browser, and your speeds (maybe). - sos

Agree completely with sosaman about the RAM, 512 MB would do a better job for you.

Possibly need to remove SP2 even if it failed to install - http://support.microsoft.com/KB/875350
    Different options to obtain SP2 or SP3 - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389

Have you run through - "Basic computer maintenance everyone should do" http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=106650

Do you have a lot of programs that have automatic updaters running in the background?

I don't konw if I have a lot of programs that have autmatic updaters or not, how do I find out? I DID do the basic computer maintenance in the malware forum. I don't have SP2 tried to install it but it didn't take. I will follow the link and emove it. Then let you know how it works Thanks

    Couple of ways.
Bring up your task manager and look at the processes running or
Use CCleaner's Startup listing under the Tools button.
Either way, do some investigating as to what is running or is starting up at boot up.

I run an older system and depending on what I've been doing recently I run in the high 30's or low 40's for number of processes but that's fairly stripped down.

if you have ccleaner installed, it would help to see your startup.

http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=86880 <-- HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post

in ccleaner, on the left-hand side --> tools --> startup (can you post this screenshot). also, check your startup folder --> start button --> all programs --> startup (post this screenshot as well, if there is anything in there).

what about any messengers (ie - aim, msn messenger, yahoo messenger, etc), what all do you have started on your taskbar (by your clock - quicktime, etc)? - sos

no messenger or yahoo IM starts up - I've attached my start up from CC cleaner and my processes running- and also, my net connection goes on and off and when I try to clean it I get DNS Cache cant be cleared.

I am planning on getting more memory- but my net is still slow right now.

Sorry I didn't get back sooner I am in the process of moving, any help would greatly be appreciated.

In your processes, if this is not a typo - unsnsvc.exe - this could possibly be a piece of malware.
    http://translate.google.com/transla...rch?q=+%22unsnsvc.exe%22&hl=en&lr=&as_qdr=all
(This is a Dutch site that has been translated.)
If it is actually - usnsvc.exe - that's Messenger Sharing USN Journal and not malware.

You also have a winlogin.exe, which if not a typo also, is a piece of malware. (winlogon.exe would be a correct process from MS)

If either of these processes are not typos, you should go to the Malware Removal forum, complete the READ and RUN ME FIRST Sticky and post the requested logs after you have done the procedures.
These guys are the best and can clean your system if you follow their directions.

    Good Luck

You did have one updater running in the start up listing, the Java updater, which you don't need and the ctfmon.exe does not really need to be running also.

Well, since you're clean, I would concentrate on getting more RAM for your machine and getting the service packs installed. If you can't get them downloaded and installed, call MS for a CD and try that. You have the links to remove from my previous post.
Once you have done that, go here and see if this can help speed up your connection.
