What motherboard are you using, and does it require specific chipset drivers for Windows? You may need to install those for Windows to recognize your hardware properly.

    VIA KT400 Chipset based
    KT4V

    MSI K7 Mainboard

    Ms-6712(v1.x) ATX Mainboard Version 1.0 G52-M6712X1

that is my motherboard. I thought with XP you didn't have to install chipset drivers? I also thought USB is native to XP so the chipset drivers wouldn't matter?? I'm not sure... thanks.

Sounds to me like the USB controllers were turned off in the BIOS...

Well, yes and no. Win XP has much better support for non-Intel chipsets than past versions, but still not perfect, and your KT-400 chipset is newer than Windows, so Windows may still have problems with it. Install the latest Hyperion drivers from http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=2

At the very least you need the VIA driver for AGP, as Billy Gates version doesn't support OpenGL, since that's a competing format with his DirectX.

i installed the 4in1 but i dont think it worked for my usb controller didn't come back yet.

i am thinking my only option is to format my c: and install windows 98, if the usb works, i'll then put xp on top of the win 98.

With all due respect, I don't see the logic behind that.

Hm. USB support in XP should be a no-brainer. If you've got an old version of Win XP that predates Service Pack 1, it won't have support for USB 2.0, but USB devices should work, albeit at the older slower speeds. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;312370&Product=winxp . If you haven't installed Service Pack 1, you should, as there are a ton of bug-fixes, security fixes, and updates included. For the sake of troubleshooting, you can download just the USB update alone. See here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822603&Product=winxp

If that doesn't cure it, only think I can think of is installing Windows with USB devices already plugged in may have botched installing USB support; it's always best to install Windows with the minimum amount of hardware connected. If the USB patch doesn't help, I'd try wiping and reinstalling again with nothing plugged into the USB ports, although that's a long shot. But having XP not install anything at all for USB is a long shot in itself.
