my norton security 2005 was about to run out so i uninstalled it and thought i'd try the free avg software in its place. AVG didn't seem to be running propaly so i unistalled it and brought new norton 2007. Then my computer kept going onto a blue screen with the message 'fatal subsystem error'
"c0000006" etc. (have the whole message if you need it). Had to turn off my Dell inspiron 3000 manually to exit this screen. On subsequent log ins this happened again or the taskbar would not load or function propaly. Eventually managed to log on without this happening but can't install my new norton 2007 due i think to conflict with remnants of AVG, (i have totally uninstalled it from my system including from C: Program files). Also having problems installing other programs.

Have researched into similar problems on net and common solution was to install free AVG again to uninstall it correctly from system, have tried this but won't let me install it propaly. I think a vital driver or something along those lines may have been deleted along the way.

any help would be muchly appreciated, would a hijack this log help? have used ccleaner etc already.

Edit: Since I can't delete my message.... this will have to take it's place. Sorry I have other solutions.

not a zip file (.exe) don't get a right-click extract option. just redownloaded from norton, the automated download service would not work (saying error01) so had to download manually to desktop. don't think the problem lyes with norton. believe that some system component may of been deleted or altered on uninstallation of the free AVG which is causing various errors and strange reactions now. does a restoring to default settings option (without losing files) exist on windows xp?

Run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility for AVG and Norton.

If that doesn't work try the steps below.

tried both methods but unfortunatley no success. One of the times it did come up with a message that norton has not detected a staller but did nothing about it and installation ceased soon after. any other ideas?

    marlymarl,
your problems may or may not be related to AVG. Was it the new 7.5 free version that you tried? Symantec produces incredibly complex software, which I used for many years with intermittent and sometimes longterm problems. One year, I couldn't get their virus updates automatically for 6 months no matter what I tried. It finally turned out that in their automated problem solving machinery, they gave me the error, but it was on my screen as a blip, and I couldn't read it. It's possible, that in deleting Nortons to begin with, that when you try to install the new version, there might be some remnant of the old nortons left that is causing the problem. Was there any chance that you could back up to an earlier restore point from before you ever took nortons out?

i think that might be the problem too, somewhere along the line uninstalling norton06 may altered something vital. can access internet but many different installation programs won't work propaly i.e. nortons removal tool etc.

    infortunatley no restore points :(

    Marymarl,
I don'T know enough to be able to help you with Windows Installer problems, but I would throw out the general question to other people if a Windows repair might be helpful?

The other thing I wanted to ask is if you ran both the automated and manual removal sequences at the Symantec website? Symantec's webpage leads you through an automated removal tool, and if that doesn't work, they offer a manual removal tool. Also, there's a link at the bottom of this page called "What if I had problems uninstalling?" It's here:
