My PC: Compaq Presario SR5027CL, Vista Premium,

Problem: BIOS update fail & cannot be recovered
Error: Help! BIOS checksum error & now keyboard detected.

    1. Tried: Reset BIOS by shorting jumper + removed batery = still did not work.
    2. Tried: Download the ISO http://www.mediafire.com/file/0nm2olgzmqy/BootIvy.iso and burn it to a blank CD using imgburn. Result: still didn't work because keyboard & mouse are not detected. But it booted to DOS prompt.

    3. BIOS needs to be reset to a completely default state & capable of detecting all input devices.

    Help!

I'm guessing you are using a USB keyboard and mouse. The simplest solution is to borrow an old PS/2 (round plug) keyboard to use during the BIOS flash. You do not need a mouse during the flash.

The other option would be to experiment with getting a DOS USB driver added to the image file and see which one works with your keyboard which will be trial and error and may take some time.

I'd see if you can dig up an old keyboard or find a cheap one somewhere. It won't be fun trying to find DOS drivers for a USB keyboard.

Thanks Sach2 for a prompt reply. Yes, USB keyboard and USB mouse is what I have. To make it usable with the PS/2 plug, I think PS/2 to USB adapter would do the job, that is if the BIOS would not be able to differentiate between the two. If not I would just find PS/2 keyboard to try out. I am surprice that the BIOS does not capable of recognize input device in the USB ports. That is an interesting concept to me. But I will keep you inform as I progress in bringing back the dead Award BIOS V1.0 (Copyright2000).

    Again thank you.

Sach2, I was able to run the BIOS flash program but I think Ivy file is too new for my Compaq Presario or my current BIOS is too corrupted and it asked me to update the ROM BIOS first. Any recomendation...

    System Board: M2N68-AL. Rev 1.01

    Thanks

    You get the A:> prompt
    Type in awdflash
    For file you type ivy.rom
Then what exactly do you see on screen?

    Screen show:

    AwardBIOS Flash Utility V8.83

    File Name to Program: ivy.com

System was not new Award BIOS version!
    Please update ROM BIOS first....

Message: Source file not found !

Note: How do I attach picture on the reply?

The file name to use is ivy.rom not ivy.com.

Was the ivy.com name a typo here at MG or did you mistype the filename on the HP in the awdflash program? It sounds to me you may have mistyped it on the computer because the error seems to be saying it can't find the file.

Pictures have to be smaller than 99kb, so may photos have to be resized smaller to fit. You could zip up the phot and then attach it as a zip file.

Here are the screens you should see http://support.asus.com.tw/technicaldocuments/technicaldocuments_content.aspx?no=532&SLanguage=en-us which screen are you working on when you get the message?

    Good work!

Your USB keyboard and mouse should now work since you have a fully functioning BIOS rather than the extremely limited boot block recovery program running. :)
