    Please can someone Help???

I have been ha:eek: ving a problem for about a month now. Almost every day when I turn on my laptop (A compaq Preasrio 2120us with Win XP SP2), the boot window comes on and almost at the end of the scrolling, it will freeze. I have to hit the power button several more times and go through the freezing boot process intil it will finally complete the boot sequence. Lately, I have had to restart the computer more and more to get to this stage.

I performed a repair reinstall of XP from recovery, but it made no difference.

Sometimes, it will even freeze when I attempt to go into safe mode. When it does, it stops on a file called MUP.SYS

Any suggestions at all? It would be greatly appreciated!!!!

    Thanks

If you have a Windows XP CD-ROM, bootwith it, go into the recovery console and replace MUP.SYS file, which may be corrupted.

Thanks for the advice. I tried your suggestion and replaced the MUP.SYS file with a clean version. Unfortunately, that wasn't it. The problem persists.

    Thanks!

We need to narrow down the possibilities ...hardware or software .... so first get into the bios and report back the temps and voltages .... also what ram amount you have.
If all is well, we'll start looking at software issues.

Boot into safe mode, when it "freezes" unhook all the USB devices and see if it continues the boot. Be sure to look what loads right after MUP.SYS.

EDIT: I would follow Matacumbie's advice before trying this step!

Hmmm... mayhap you could try running the system file checker, which will check all your system files for errors and corruption, and replace them with good working copies. To do so, please follow the steps below:

    1. Insert your XP installation disc
    2. Hit windows key + r (or click start --> run)
    3. Type 'cmd' (without the quotes)
    4. Hit enter (or click 'OK')
    5. Type 'sfc /scannow' (without the quotes)
    6. Press enter

This will run the system file checker, replacing any bad system files with good ones from the installation disc.

    Hope it helps!

    Tim W,

Is this the bios information that you are looking for?

When your system first boots up ... the very first screen will have ( either at the bottom or top corner) something that tells you what to hit to enter setup ... could be f1, f2, delete .... maybe f10 all depending (guess I should go look it up ... be back!)
That will take you into your bios settings ..... should be a "power managment" (?) page that has temps and voltages ....
Sorry, guess I really do need a nap .... Yes that's your first screen (I think) in the bios settings there should be one that is the power management ....
