Help! Cannot start computer unless in safe mode

My other computer, which is not hooked to the internet, will not load up unless it is in Safe Mode. It is Win98 and I get a black screen which reads:
While initializing device TEEFER: Invalid VxD dynamic link call to device number 28 service 800A. Your Windows configuration is invalid. Run the Windows setup program again to correct this problem.
At some point while trying to troubleshoot, it told me to run the Win98 Second Edition cdrom. I am unable to run anything in the D drive. In Safe Mode, the D drive doesn't even appear in "My Computer".
Any suggestions????

 

When it says to run the cdrom it normally wants you to boot to it on the initial start up. If you do you can try to run the repair option. It has been awhile since I used Win98 so someone else would have to walk you through the process of running a repair using it.

It will not run at start up.

 

You will need to set your BIOS to boot to the cdrom before the hard drive. At boot up the initial screen will normally give you the option to enter setup by hitting a key, such as F2, F10, Esc, and so on...

Watch for this and press the appropriate key. Under the BIOS menus you will find one showing boot order or something to that effect. Make sure it is set to boot to cdrom first. You can change this setting back if you like later.

Hmm...this of course assuming that your 98 cd is a bootable version.

Give this a shot and let me know what you get.

 

It's telling me not to continue with the disk because Windows is already installed on the computer.

 

Ok, Try one more thing here.

When you boot into safe mode try going to your run command. Type in msconfig and hit enter. I believe this command works in 98...

Click on the startup tab and disable everything except your antivirus software from this menu by removing the check marks.

Click apply then ok and reboot.

Let see what happens
