help can't get online with Dell gx110/windows xp,please help

I just had a dell gx110 computer given to me, I installed xp pro from disk, and whenever I try to get online it won't saying something like network plug missing, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling and it keeps telling me that it can't find the modem driver even after I manually install one and it tells me that install complete, this computer was a second computer in my friends home and it was connected to another one ,is there some thing I need to do to make this a non-network computer? I really don't know very much about computers and he did not know either, what should I do? any help is appreciated Magickman

 

are u using dial up or high speed

I went to dell support and got modem test and it found the modem,But it says that there was some keys missing in register and no dial tone, also when I go to device mgr it keeps telling me that modem installed but it also shows PCI device not installed with a yellow sign, also the icon for my connection has a red x.

 

Hello, I have ran the connection wizard and when it was done I pulled up my isp and it tried to dial but it sent a message[cannot connect hardware problem] so I went and checked the modem again and it said it was working correctly,also I downloaded the modem test from support site and ran it, the test said modem ok,but, it says something is wwrong in the registry, I've gotta tell you I know very little about all of this and I would be truly happy if someone could help,thanks...magickman ps..I only have dial up service
