I am working on my moms pc, it had 98 on it, and it will only start in safe mode, So I decided to just replace the HD and load XP Pro on it. The machine consists of a AMD Athalon 750 on a Soyo mainboard. 256 133 Mem and a WD 40g HD. The Bios sees the HD, went through with FDISK and set up the HD. Booted to the XP Pro cd, it runs for a while on the blue screen that says "Windows Setup" When it gets to the point what it says "Setup is Starting Windows" It hangs!!!! Suggestions? Please.

Many things can cause that with old PCs .. ones I have experienced are....

Bios needs Updating... manufacturers site will have update if available.
Bios virus setting enabled ... need to disable.

You replaced the HDD, maybe that wasnt the problem to begin with.
    Does this PC support XP.
Have you tryed to install xp a second time, did it hang again at the same time?
Try a third time, run setup then choose to repair install of exsisting XP, see if that will get ya to boot.

Another option try to install 98 on that new HDD, see if that will boot.

Not sure if the HD was the problem, but it was a starting point. Not sure where to go from there

Also not sure if the board would rejext XP, that would be a first for me. Hangs every time I try it. I will try to find a decent flash for it.

I think you are right about the board not XP ready. I loaded 98 succsessfully then tried to upgrade to XP, I let XP check to see if it can load, It said sure, everything is fine! It hung. Oh well, I am back at work today and have a few extra PCs to play with, I will use that. Do you think a Bios update would help it? It would be sad to retire a 750.

Ummm...so far as I know there is no such thing as a non-XP ready pc motherboard....I mean I don't know everything, but I have never ever heard such a thing....now XP might reject the boards functionality when you install drivers that have'nt been set up for XP...but that does'nt make since for the motherboard to reject software like that. It might be the hard drive being too big though, the motherboard might not be able to handle a hard drive of that size, but if this is an AMD 750MHZ cpu that is new enough that it should'nt be a problem either. Again, please by all means correct me if I'm wrong, I've just never heard of a pc motherboard rejecting an IBM compatible OS....

Nor have I, but it is the only viable explaination I can have right now. It is very maddening.

Guys, Microsoft has this thing called a "Hardware Compatibility List" (HCL for short)

Look it up on their website, get the Windows XP copy.

This should tell you if the Mobo you have is supported. If it is several years old, there is no reason why it should not be....

    Good Luck.
